@article{fdi:010085229, title = {{I}ntroductory paper of the 8th {I}nternational {S}ymposium on {A}ndean {G}eodynamics ({ISAG}) special number}, author = {{C}arretier, {S}{\'e}bastien and {A}udemard, {F}. and {A}udin, {L}aurence and {H}idalgo, {S}. and {L}e {P}ennec, {J}. {L}. and {M}ora, {H}. and {N}ocquet, {J}ean-{M}athieu and {S}amaniego, {P}ablo}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {I}nternational {S}ymposium on {A}ndean {G}eodynamics ({ISAG}) is an international conference that was held, on average, every 3-4 years in different {E}uropean cities between 1990 ({G}renoble) and 2008 ({N}ice). {T}hese symposia usually offer an opportunity for researchers from {L}atin {A}merican countries and {E}urope as well as other countries to review the state of knowledge in geosciences on the {A}ndes. {A}fter a long period without an edition, the 8th {ISAG} was organized for the first time in a {L}atin {A}merican country, {E}cuador, from 24th to 26th {S}eptember 2019. {T}he organizing committee led by {P}ablo {S}amaniego relied heavily on the {I}nstituto {G}eofisico of the {E}scuela {P}olitecnica {N}acional ({IG}-{EPN}) and the {I}nstitut de {R}echerche pour le {D}eveloppement ({IRD}), in particular through its office in {Q}uito, and through the {L}aboratoire {M}ixte {I}nternational in {F}rance and {E}cuador: "{S}eismes et {V}olcans dans les {A}ndes du {N}ord"({LMI}-{SVAN}); and the {F}rench {E}mbassy in {E}cuador. {F}ield trips in tectonics, seismotectonics and volcanology at emblematic sites in {E}cuador were organized by researchers from the {IRD} ({I}sterre and {LMV}), the {I}nstitut de {R}adio {P}rotection {N}ucleaire ({IRSN}), {IG}-{EPN} and the {U}niversity of {G}eneva. {F}our invited speakers gave presentations: {P}eter {M}olnar ({U}niversity of {B}oulder) on the mechanisms of the {A}ndes uplift, {S}uzanne {K}ay ({C}ornell {U}niversity) on its magmatism, {V}ictor {R}amos ({U}niversity of {B}uenos {A}ires) on the scientific approaches developed through time for the {A}ndean orogeny and {E}ric {C}alais ({E}cole {N}ormale {S}uperieure de {P}aris) on the difficulty of dialog between seismic risk specialists and the authorities in {H}aiti. {T}he symposium also provided an opportunity for more than 250 participants to meet, with more than 80 oral presentations and over 150 posters. {A}s a result of this conference, the {E}ditor of the {J}ournal of {S}outh {A}merican {E}arth {S}ciences proposed to the organizing committee to publish a special issue on the contours of these presentations. {F}ollowing the peer review process, 19 papers are published in this special issue. {T}hese manuscripts reflect the various disciplinary fields, geophysics and deep imaging, tectonics, volcanism, geomorphology and seismic hazard, from the local scale to the {A}ndes as a whole. {N}ot surprisingly, a higher density of works is found in {E}cuador and the northern {A}ndes ({F}igure 1). {A}s this collection of articles reflects the outlines of a symposium and not a specific scientific question, our aim here is not to develop a synthesis of current knowledge on the {A}ndes. {W}e therefore present these articles in sequence, by discipline, although this categorization may appear subjective since some articles are multidisciplinary.}, keywords = {{I}ntroductory paper ; {AMERIQUE} {DU} {SUD} ; {AMERIQUE} {CENTRALE} ; {ANDES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {S}outh {A}merican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {116}, numero = {}, pages = {103802 [5 ]}, ISSN = {0895-9811}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jsames.2022.103802}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010085229}, }
