@article{fdi:010085201, title = {{A}pplication of {DNA} {B}arcoding for monitoring {M}adagascar fish biodiversity in coastal areas}, author = {{J}aonalison, {H}. and {D}urand, {J}ean-{D}ominique and {M}ahafina, {J}. and {V}alade, {P}. and {C}ollet, {A}. and {C}erqueira, {F}. and {P}onton, {D}ominique}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}adagascar is a marine biodiversity hotspot. {A} recent checklist recorded 1689 marine or transitional water fish species, 2.5% being endemic. {T}o date, studies in this country were mostly focused on adult fishes using morphological-based identification. {T}he early life stages of fishes remain largely understudied. {T}he present work aimed to improve knowledge of fish biodiversity in {M}adagascar by focusing on post-larval reef fishes and settled juveniles in seagrass meadows of southwest {M}adagascar by using either species identification keys or {DNA} barcoding. {U}p to 119,500 individuals were collected, and 1096 individuals were successfully barcoded. {W}e identified 387 species-85 through their morphology (with 58 unsuccessfully sequenced) and 302 by using {CO}1 barcoding corresponding to 302 barcode index numbers ({BIN}s). {T}his study added 27 new {BIN}s for the {BOLD} database, 120 new for {M}adagascar, but only 159 were assigned a precise species name. {B}y referring to the updated checklist of {M}adagascar fishes, 10 new species were detected for {M}adagascar. {T}his number will probably increase when all the barcoded specimens become assigned to precise species names. {T}hese preliminary findings stress our poor knowledge of marine fish biodiversity in {M}adagascar and demonstrate the relevance of {DNA} barcoding in improving this knowledge.}, keywords = {molecular tool ; fish post-larvae ; fish juvenile ; coastal habitat ; marine ; biodiversity ; {MADAGASCAR} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE} ; {NOSY} {VE} ; {TULEAR} ; {ANAKAO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{D}iversity}, volume = {14}, numero = {5}, pages = {377 [13 ]}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.3390/d14050377}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010085201}, }
