@article{fdi:010085186, title = {{S}patio-temporal variability in drifting {F}ish {A}ggregating {D}evice (d{FAD}) beaching events in the {S}eychelles {A}rchipelago}, author = {{M}ac{M}illan, {I}. and {A}ttrill, {M}. {J}. and {I}mzilen, {T}aha and {L}ett, {C}hristophe and {W}almsley, {S}. and {C}hu, {C}. and {K}aplan, {D}avid}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}urse-seine fisheries use drifting {F}ish {A}ggregating {D}evices (d{FAD}s), human-made floating objects, to facilitate the capture of tropical tunas. {C}urrently, the majority of d{FAD}s are constructed primarily of highly durable non-biodegradable materials and there is no legal obligation to recover d{FAD}s after deployment, leading to beaching events and potentially negative environmental impacts. {W}e assessed beachings as a function of intra- and inter-annual trends, water depth, distance from land, seasonality, and benthic habitat within the local context of the {S}eychelles {A}rchipelago using trajectories of d{FAD}s deployed by {F}rench purse seiners over 2008-2020. {O}verall, 3842 beaching events associated with 2371 distinct d{FAD} tracking buoys were identified. {B}eachings occurred most frequently during the winter monsoon ({D}ecember-{M}arch). {D}ue to the shallow {M}ahe {P}lateau, beachings occurred in both nearshore (<= 5 km from land) and offshore (> 5 km) regions, predominantly in estimated depths less than 60 m. {D}espite representing < 20% of overall mapped habitat, the benthic habitat "{C}oral/{A}lgae" had the highest beaching rate (35.3% of beachings), and therefore, beachings pose a significant concern for conservation. {O}ur results provide a detailed view of the spatio-temporal pattern of beachings in the {S}eychelles, supporting the development of mitigation and prevention methods to reduce marine debris and perturbations to the marine environment.}, keywords = {abandoned lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear ({ALDFG}) ; coral reefs ; marine conservation ; marine litter ; purse seine ; tropical tuna ; fisheries ; {SEYCHELLES} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{ICES} {J}ournal of {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[14 ]}, ISSN = {1054-3139}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1093/icesjms/fsac091}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010085186}, }
