@article{fdi:010085068, title = {{N}ovel plant communities after glacial retreat in {C}olombia : (many) losses and (few) gains}, author = {{A}nthelme, {F}abien and {C}arrasquer, {I}. and {C}eballos, {J}. {L}. and {P}eyre, {G}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}arly plant primary succession in recently deglacierized terrains is a good indicator of the species losses and gains that affect novel alpine plant communities migrating under the pressure of climate warming. {I}n the tropical alpine -paramo- region of the northern {A}ndes, home to the world's greatest alpine phyto-diversity, forced primary succession will condition the conservation of many species. {U}sing a post-glacial chronosequence between the little ice age and present below the {C}onejeras glacier ({C}olombia) as a space-for-time substitution approach, we sought to determine how time since deglacierization affects the composition, the biogeographic origin and the growth form distribution of novel tropical alpine plant communities. {U}sing an array of multivariate techniques and the {D}irichlet model, we assessed relationships among plant communities and with environmental factors. {C}ommunities established in less than 169 years lacked a number of characteristic and endemic species usually found in the national park {L}os {N}evados, such as {C}alamagrostis effusa, {S}enecio isabelis and {E}speletia hartwegiana. {M}oreover, these communities have been colonized by non-native species, e.g., {R}umex acetosella. {U}pright shrubs and large tussock grasses, characteristic of the alpine tropics, established slowly because they required highly organic, slow-developing soils. {T}axa of tropical biogeographic origin were under-represented early after deglacierization in comparison with temperate taxa. {T}hese results suggest the existence of a strong climatic debt for some native species, tropical growth forms and taxa of tropical origin, which may translate into significant taxonomic and functional losses whereas the few observed gains concern the establishment of non-native species.}, keywords = {{B}iogeographic origins ; {C}limatic debt ; {G}rowth forms ; {L}os {N}evados national park ; {P}ost-glacial chronosequence ; {T}ropical alpine ; {COLOMBIE} ; {ANDES} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE} ; {LOS} {NEVADOS} {PARC} {NATIONAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}lpine {B}otany}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[12 p.]}, ISSN = {1664-2201}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1007/s00035-022-00282-1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010085068}, }
