@article{fdi:010084508, title = {{M}orphological, molecular and {MALDI}-{TOF} {MS} identification of bedbugs and associated {W}olbachia species in rural {S}enegal}, author = {{N}diaye, {E}. {I}. and {D}iatta, {G}eorges and {D}iarra, {A}. {Z}. and {B}erenger, {J}. {M}. and {B}assene, {H}. and {M}ediannikov, {O}leg and {B}ouganali, {C}. and {S}okhna, {C}heikh and {P}arola, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ed bugs are known to carry several microorganisms. {T}he purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of bed bug infestation in two rural areas of {S}enegal and determine the species present in the population. {A} screening was conducted to detect some arthropod associated pathogenic bacteria in bed bugs and to evaluate the prevalence of endosymbiont carriage. {O}ne survey took place in 17 villages in {N}iakhar and two surveys in {D}ielmo and {N}diop and surroundings area in the same 20 villages. {B}ed bugs collected were identified morphologically and by {MALDI}-{TOF} {MS} tools. {M}icroorganisms screening was performed by q{PCR} and confirmed by sequencing. {D}uring the survey in the {N}iakhar region, only one household 1/255 (0.4%) in the village of {N}gayokhem was found infested by bed bugs. {I}n a monitoring survey of the surroundings of {D}ielmo and {N}diop area, high prevalence was found during the two rounds of surveys in 65/314 (21%) in 16/20 villages ({J}anuary-{M}arch) and 93/351 (26%) in 19/20 villages ({D}ecember). {A}ll bed bugs were morphologically identified as the species {C}imex hemipterus, of which 285/1,637 (17%) were randomly selected for {MALDI}-{TOF} {MS} analysis and bacteria screening. {A}mong the {B}acteria tested only {W}olbachia ({A}lphaproteobacteria, {R}ickettsiales, {R}ickettsiaceae) {DNA} was found in 248/276 (90%) of the bedbugs. {W}e briefly describe a high level of non-generalized bed bug infestation in rural {S}enegal and the diversity of {W}olbachia strains carried by {C}. hemipterus. {T}his study opens perspectives for raising household awareness of bed bug infestations and possibilities for appropriate control.}, keywords = {bed bug ; {MALDI}-{TOF} {MS} ; {C}imex hemipterus ; {W}olbachia ; {S}enegal ; {SENEGAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {M}edical {E}ntomology}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[14 p.]}, ISSN = {0022-2585}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1093/jme/tjac019}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084508}, }
