@article{fdi:010084353, title = {{A}ctions to halt biodiversity loss generally benefit the climate}, author = {{S}hin, {Y}unne-{J}ai and {M}idgley, {G}. {F}. and {A}rcher, {E}. {R}. {M}. and {A}rneth, {A}. and {B}arnes, {D}. {K}. {A}. and {C}han, {L}. and {H}ashimoto, {S}. and {H}oegh-{G}uldberg, {O}. and {I}nsarov, {G}. and {L}eadley, {P}. and {L}evin, {L}. {A}. and {N}go, {H}. {T}. and {P}andit, {R}. and {P}ires, {A}. {P}. {F}. and {P}ortner, {H}. {O}. and {R}ogers, {A}. {D}. and {S}choles, {R}. {J}. and {S}ettele, {J}. and {S}mith, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he two most urgent and interlinked environmental challenges humanity faces are climate change and biodiversity loss. {W}e are entering a pivotal decade for both the international biodiversity and climate change agendas with the sharpening of ambitious strategies and targets by the {C}onvention on {B}iological {D}iversity and the {U}nited {N}ations {F}ramework {C}onvention on {C}limate {C}hange. {W}ithin their respective {C}onventions, the biodiversity and climate interlinked challenges have largely been addressed separately. {T}here is evidence that conservation actions that halt, slow or reverse biodiversity loss can simultaneously slow anthropogenic mediated climate change significantly. {T}his review highlights conservation actions which have the largest potential for mitigation of climate change. {W}e note that conservation actions have mainly synergistic benefits and few antagonistic trade-offs with climate change mitigation. {S}pecifically, we identify direct co-benefits in 14 out of the 21 action targets of the draft post-2020 global biodiversity framework of the {C}onvention on {B}iological {D}iversity, notwithstanding the many indirect links that can also support both biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. {T}hese relationships are context and scale-dependent; therefore, we showcase examples of local biodiversity conservation actions that can be incentivized, guided and prioritized by global objectives and targets. {T}he close interlinkages between biodiversity, climate change mitigation, other nature's contributions to people and good quality of life are seldom as integrated as they should be in management and policy. {T}his review aims to re-emphasize the vital relationships between biodiversity conservation actions and climate change mitigation in a timely manner, in support to major {C}onferences of {P}arties that are about to negotiate strategic frameworks and international goals for the decades to come.}, keywords = {biodiversity conservation ; carbon sequestration ; climate change ; mitigation ; convention on biological diversity ; nature-based solutions ; restoration ; {MONDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}lobal {C}hange {B}iology}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[29 ]}, ISSN = {1354-1013}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1111/gcb.16109}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084353}, }
