@article{fdi:010084351, title = {{D}iversity of coral reef fishes in the {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean : implications for conservation}, author = {{S}amoilys, {M}. and {A}lvarez-{F}ilip, {L}. and {M}yers, {R}. and {C}habanet, {P}ascale}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}ommunities of coral reef fishes are changing due to global warming and overfishing. {T}o understand these changes and inform conservation, knowledge of species diversity and distributions is needed. {T}he western {I}ndian {O}cean ({WIO}) contains the second highest coral reef biodiversity hotspot globally, yet a detailed analysis of the diversity of coral reef fishes is lacking. {T}his study developed a timed visual census method and recorded 356 species from 19 families across four countries in the {WIO} to examine patterns in species diversity. {S}pecies richness and composition differed most between the island countries of {M}adagascar and {C}omoros and both these locations differed from locations in {T}anzania and {M}ozambique which were similar. {T}hese three regional groupings helped define {WIO} ecoregions for conservation planning. {T}he highest species richness was found in {T}anzania and {M}ozambique, and the lowest and most different species composition was found in {C}omoros. {B}iogeography explains these differences with naturally lower species diversity expected from the small, oceanic, and isolated islands of {C}omoros. {P}resent day ocean currents maintain these diversity patterns and help explain the species composition in northeast {M}adagascar. {S}pecies distributions were driven by 46 of the 356 species; these provide guidance on important species for ongoing monitoring. {T}he results provide a benchmark for testing future changes in reef fish species richness.}, keywords = {coral reef fishes ; species diversity ; {I}ndian {O}cean ; conservation ; climate change ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {MADAGASCAR} ; {COMORES} ; {MOZAMBIQUE} ; {TANZANIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{D}iversity}, volume = {14}, numero = {2}, pages = {102 [18 p.]}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.3390/d14020102}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084351}, }
