@article{fdi:010084312, title = {{T}he {N}azca {D}rift {S}ystem - palaeoceanographic significance of a giant sleeping on the {SE} {P}acific {O}cean floor}, author = {{C}alves, {G}. and {M}ix, {A}. and {G}iosan, {L}. and {C}lift, {P}. {D}. and {B}russet, {S}. and {B}aby, {P}atrice and {V}ega, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he evolution and resulting morphology of a contourite drift system in the {SE} {P}acific oceanic basin is investigated in detail using seismic imaging and an age-calibrated borehole section. {T}he {N}azca {D}rift {S}ystem covers an area of 204 500 km(2) and stands above the abyssal basins of {P}eru and {C}hile. {T}he drift is spread along the {N}azca {R}idge in water depths between 2090 and 5330 m. {T}he {N}azca {D}rift {S}ystem was drilled at {O}cean {D}rilling {P}rogram {S}ite 1237. {T}his deep-water drift overlies faulted oceanic crust and onlaps associated volcanic highs. {I}ts thickness ranges from 104 to 375 m. {T}he seismic sheet facies observed are associated with bottom current processes. {T}he main lithologies are pelagic carbonates reflecting the distal position relative to {S}outh {A}merica and water depth above the carbonate compensation depth during {O}ligocene time. {T}he {N}azca {D}rift {S}ystem developed under the influence of bottom currents sourced from the {C}ircumpolar {D}eep {W}ater and {P}acific {C}entral {W}ater, and is the largest yet identified abyssal drift system of the {P}acific {O}cean, ranking third in all abyssal contourite drift systems globally. {S}ubduction since late {M}iocene time and the excess of sediments and water associated with the {N}azca {D}rift {S}ystem may have contributed to the {A}ndean orogeny and associated metallogenesis. {T}he {N}azca {D}rift {S}ystem records the evolution in interactions between deep-sea currents and the eastward motion of the {N}azca {P}late through erosive surfaces and sediment remobilization.}, keywords = {{N}azca {R}idge ; {N}azca {D}rift {S}ystem ; {C}ontourite drift ; {O}ligocene ; {SE} {P}acific {O}cean ; palaeoceanography ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {NAZCA} {DORSALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eological {M}agazine}, volume = {159}, numero = {3}, pages = {322--336}, ISSN = {0016-7568}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1017/s0016756821000960}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084312}, }
