@article{fdi:010084295, title = {{U}rban land expansion from scratch to urban agglomeration in the {F}ederal {D}istrict of {B}razil in the past 60 years}, author = {{L}i, {Z}. {C}. and {G}urgel, {H}. and {L}i, {M}. {M}. and {D}essay, {N}adine and {G}ong, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}mpirical studies of urban expansion have increased rapidly in recent decades worldwide. {P}revious studies mainly focused on cities in {C}hina, the {U}nited {S}tates or {A}frican countries, with {B}razilian cities receiving less attention. {M}oreover, such studies are rare in purpose-built cities. {T}aking the urban expansion from scratch (1960) to urban agglomeration (2015) in the {F}ederal {D}istrict of {B}razil ({FDB}) as an example, this study aims to quantify the magnitude, patterns, modes, types and efficiency of urban land expansion and attempts to reveal some implications within sustainable urban expansion thinking. {A}nnual expansion, landscape metrics, local {M}oran's {I} index, area weighted mean expansion index, and land-use efficiency were computed. {T}he suitability of diffusion-coalescence theory and the impact of population growth and urban development policies on urban expansion were discussed. {U}rban land continuously expanded and became more fragmented during 1960-2015, which mainly occurred in {SSW} and {WSW} directions. {U}rban land evolved in a polycentric way. {E}dge expansion was identified as the stable contributor, and the importance of infilling and spontaneous growth alternated. {U}rban expansion in this region supported the diffusion-coalescence theory. {P}opulation growth promoted urban expansion, and the creation of peripheral urban nuclei and their development were associated with the urban expansion and the changes in urban land structure. {T}his study adds new empirical evidence of urban expansion to {B}razil urbanization, and compact urbanization, population control, and efficient urban land use should be considered in the future.}, keywords = {purpose-built city ; urban expansion ; spatial pattern ; {B}razil ; {BRESIL} ; {BRASILIA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {E}nvironmental {R}esearch and {P}ublic {H}ealth}, volume = {19}, numero = {3}, pages = {1032 [19 ]}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.3390/ijerph19031032}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084295}, }
