@article{fdi:010084280, title = {{E}mergence of dengue virus serotype 2 in {M}auritania and molecular characterization of its circulation in {W}est {A}frica}, author = {{F}ourie, {T}. and {E}l {B}ara, {A}. and {D}ubot {P}{\'e}r{\`e}s, {A}udrey and {G}rard, {G}. and {B}riolant, {S}. and {B}asco, {L}eonardo and {M}oukah, {M}. {O}. and {L}eparc-{G}offart, {I}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he number of sporadic and epidemic dengue fever cases have reportedly been increasing in recent years in some {W}est {A}frican countries, such as {S}enegal and {M}ali. {T}he first epidemic of laboratory-confirmed dengue occurred in {N}ouakchott, the capital city of {M}auritania situated in the {S}aharan desert, in 2014. {O}n-site diagnosis of dengue fever was established using a rapid diagnostic test for dengue. {I}n parallel, the presence of {A}edes aegypti mosquitoes in the city was confirmed. {T}he initial diagnosis was confirmed by {RT}-{PCR}, which showed that all samples from the 2014 dengue epidemic in {N}ouakchott were dengue virus serotype 2 ({DENV}-2). {T}he whole genome or envelope protein gene of these strains, together with other {DENV}-2 strains obtained from travelers returning from {W}est {A}frican countries to {F}rance between 2016 and 2019 (including two {M}auritanian strains in 2017 and 2018), were sequenced. {P}hylogenetic analysis suggested a recent emergence of an epidemic strain from the cosmopolitan genotype belonging to {W}est {A}frican cosmopolitan lineage {II}, which is genetically distinct from {A}frican sylvatic genotype. {T}he origin of this {DENV}-2 lineage is still unknown, but our data seem to suggest a recent and rapid dispersion of the epidemic strain throughout the region. {M}ore complete genome sequences of {W}est {A}frican {DENV}-2 are required for a better understanding of the dynamics of its circulation. {A}rboviral surveillance and outbreak forecasting are urgently needed in {W}est {A}frica.}, keywords = {{MAURITANIE} ; {AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST} ; {FRANCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{PL}o{S} {N}eglected {T}ropical {D}iseases}, volume = {15}, numero = {10}, pages = {e0009829 [15 p.]}, ISSN = {1935-2735}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pntd.0009829}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084280}, }
