@article{fdi:010084251, title = {{S}r isotope ratios ({S}r-87/{S}r-86) in water and fish otoliths as estuarine salinity tracers : case studies from {T}hree {NW} {A}frican rivers}, author = {{H}opker, {S}. {N}. and {W}u, {H}. {C}. and {L}ucassen, {F}. and {S}adio, {O}. and {B}rochier, {T}imoth{\'e}e and {N}uworkpor, {I}. {Y}. and {K}asemann, {S}. {A}. and {M}erschel, {P}. and {W}estphal, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{V}ariations of strontium isotope ratios ({S}r-87/{S}r-86) in river systems are increasingly utilised to geochemically trace origin and movement patterns of migratory fish species. {A}ccretionary calcified structures, such as otoliths, preserve {S}r-87/{S}r-86 signatures of the surrounding water during a fish's lifetime. {I}n this study, we present {S}r-87/{S}r-86 measurements of water samples and catfish otoliths collected in the estuaries of the {S}ine-{S}aloum ({S}enegal), the {G}ambia {R}iver ({T}he {G}ambia), and the {V}olta {R}iver ({G}hana) to assess their systematics and relationships with salinity. {T}he three rivers possess distinct hydrological properties resulting in variable degrees of correlations between 87 {S}r/ 86 {S}r and salinity. {T}he {G}ambia {R}iver ({S}r-87/{S}r-86 of similar to 0.71209) proved exceptionally preconditioned for the approach due to well-defined geochemical end-members, allowing for quantitative estimates of salinity based on otolith {S}r-87/{S}r-86 measurements. {T}he {V}olta {R}iver (similar to 0.71392) presents a more complex case due the possible influence of multiple water sources to the main channel, while the inverse salinity gradient and excessive evaporation in the {S}ine-{S}aloum estuary (similar to 0.70915) impede any significant correlations between {S}r-87/{S}r-86 and salinity. {B}ulk otolith {S}r-87/{S}r-86 values in the {G}ambia {R}iver and {V}olta {R}iver clearly depicted a mixed influence of seawater and riverine compositions, strongly encouraging the application of this approach for geochemical fingerprinting of critical {NW} {A}frican species.}, keywords = {{S}trontium ; {S}alinity ; {H}ydrochemistry ; {C}arbonate ; {C}atfish ; {W}est {A}frica ; {SENEGAL} ; {GAMBIE} ; {GHANA} ; {SINE} {SALOUM} ; {GAMBIE} {COURS} {D}'{EAU} ; {VOLTA} {COURS} {D}'{EAU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}stuaries and {C}oasts}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[23 ]}, ISSN = {1559-2723}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1007/s12237-021-01041-x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084251}, }
