@article{fdi:010084237, title = {{P}f{EMP}1-specific immunoglobulin {G} reactivity among {B}eninese pregnant women with sickle cell trait}, author = {{L}opez-{P}erez, {M}. and {V}iwami, {F}. and {S}eidu, {Z}. and {J}ensen, {A}. {T}. {R}. and {D}oritchamou, {J}. and {T}uikue {N}dam, {N}icaise and {H}viid, {L}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground. {S}ickle cell trait ({H}b{AS}) protects against severe {P}lasmodium falciparum malaria but not against placental malaria ({PM}). {I}n this study, {P} falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein ({P}f{EMP}1)-specific antibodies were measured in {H}b{AA} and {H}b{AS} {B}eninese pregnant women as a proxy of exposure to specific {P}f{EMP}1 variants. {M}ethods. {P}lasma samples collected at delivery from 338 {H}b{AA} and 63 {H}b{AS} women were used to measure immunoglobulin ({I}g){G} levels to 6 recombinant {P}f{EMP}1 proteins and 3 corresponding native proteins expressed on the infected erythrocyte ({IE}) surface. {I}mmunoglobulin {G}-mediated inhibition of {VAR}2{CSA}(+) {IE}s adhesion to chondroitin sulfate {A} ({CSA}) was also tested. {R}esults. {L}evels of {P}f{EMP}1-specific {I}g{G} were similar in the 2 groups, except for native {IT}4{VAR}09 on {IE}s, where {I}g{G} levels were significantly higher in {H}b{AS} women. {A}djusted odds ratios for women with positive {I}g{G} to {HB}3{VAR}06 and {PFD}1235w suggest a lower risk of infection with these virulent variants among {H}b{AS} individuals.
