@article{fdi:010084214, title = {{D}etection and genetic diversity of {M}opeia virus in {M}astomys natalensis from different habitats in the {L}impopo {N}ational {P}ark, {M}ozambique}, author = {{M}apaco, {L}. and {C}respin, {L}. and {R}odrigues, {D}. and de {B}ellocq, {J}. {G}. and {B}ryja, {J}. and {B}ourgarel, {M}. and {M}iss{\'e}, {D}oroth{\'e}e and {C}aron, {A}. and {F}afetine, {J}. and {C}appelle, {J}. and {L}i{\'e}geois, {F}lorian}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ammarenaviruses have been a growing concern for public health in {A}frica since the 1970s when {L}assa virus cases in humans were first described in west {A}frica. {I}n southern {A}frica, a single outbreak of {L}ujo virus was reported to date in {S}outh {A}frica in 2008 with a case fatality rate of 80%. {T}he natural reservoir of {L}assa virus is {M}astomys natalensis while for the {L}ujo virus the natural host has yet to be identified. {M}opeia virus was described for the first time in {M}. natalensis in the central {M}ozambique in 1977 but few studies have been conducted in the region. {I}n this study, rodents were trapped between {M}arch and {N}ovember 2019 in villages, croplands fields and mopane woodland forest. {T}he aim was to assess the potential circulation and to evaluate the genetic diversity of mammarenaviruses in {M}. natalensis trapped in the {L}impopo {N}ational {P}ark and its buffer zone in {M}assingir district, {M}ozambique. {A} total of 534 {M}. natalensis were screened by {RT}-{PCR} and the overall proportion of positive individuals was 16.9%. {N}o significant differences were detected between the sampled habitats (chi 2 = 0.018; {DF} = 1; p = 0.893). {T}he {M}opeia virus (bootstrap value 91%) was the {M}ammarenavirus circulating in the study area sites, forming a specific sub-clade with eight different sub-clusters. {W}e concluded that {M}opeia virus circulates in all habitats investigated and it forms a different sub-clade to the one reported in central {M}ozambique in 1977.}, keywords = {{M}ammarenavirus ; {P}hylogeny ; {M}astomys natalensis ; {M}ozambique ; {MOZAMBIQUE} ; {LIMPOPO} {PARC} {NATIONAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nfection {G}enetics and {E}volution}, volume = {98}, numero = {}, pages = {105204 [7 ]}, ISSN = {1567-1348}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1016/j.meegid.2022.105204}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084214}, }
