@article{fdi:010084207, title = {{E}ffect of weather on monthly electricity consumption in three coastal cities in {W}est {A}frica}, author = {{A}kara, {G}. {K}. and {H}ingray, {B}. and {D}iawara, {A}. and {D}iedhiou, {A}rona}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n several regions worldwide, demand for electricity can be highly dependent on weather conditions. {T}his study investigates the relationships between weather and electricity consumption in three {W}est {A}frican cities. {M}onthly electricity consumption datasets for the cities of {A}bidjan ({I}vory {C}oast), {C}otonou ({B}enin) and {L}ome ({T}ogo) for the 1990-2015, 2000-2015 and 2008-2014 periods respectively were collected from national electricity companies, and meteorological data of the synoptic stations were used to compute {C}ooling {D}egree-{D}ays in the three cities. {T}he {C}ooling {D}egree-{D}ays indices were estimated using air temperature and two temperature indices (the {H}umidex and the {H}eat {I}ndex). {F}or the statistical analysis, classical multiplicative decomposition was applied to consumption data for subperiods for which consumption was considered to show relatively homogeneous evolutionary behavior ({A}bidjan and {L}ome from 2011 to 2014 and {C}otonou from 2009 to 2014). {R}egardless of the temperature indices considered in the three cities, the {C}ooling {D}egree-{D}ays indices are well correlated with the seasonal variability of power consumption and particularly, the peak consumption observed in {M}arch and the lower consumption in {A}ugust. {S}lightly better correlations are obtained for {C}otonou and {A}bidjan when the heat index (combining both temperature and relative humidity) are used to calculate the {C}ooling {D}egree-{D}ays.}, keywords = {electricity consumption ; cooling degree days ; temperature ; heat index ; {W}est {A}frica ; {COTE} {D}'{IVOIRE} ; {BENIN} ; {TOGO} ; {ABIDJAN} ; {COTONOU} ; {LOME}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{AIMS} {E}nergy}, volume = {9}, numero = {3}, pages = {446--464}, ISSN = {2333-8326}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.3934/energy.2021022}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084207}, }
