  abstract = {{T}he {SW} {P}acific region consists of a succession of ridges and basins that were created by the fragmentation of {G}ondwana and the evolution of subduction zones since {M}esozoic times. {T}his complex geodynamic evolution shaped the geology of {N}ew {C}aledonia, which lies in the northern part of the {Z}ealandia continent. {A}lternative tectonic models have been postulated. {M}ost models agree that {N}ew {C}aledonia was situated on an active plate margin of eastern {G}ondwana during the {M}esozoic. {E}xtension affected the region from the {L}ate {C}retaceous to the {P}aleocene and models for this period vary in the location and nature of the plate boundary between the {P}acific and {A}ustralian plates. {E}ocene regional tectonic contraction included the obduction of a mantle-derived {P}eridotite {N}appe in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {I}n one class of model, this contractional phase was controlled by an east-dipping subduction zone into which the {N}orfolk {R}idge jammed, whereas and in a second class of model this phase corresponds to the initiation of the west-dipping {T}onga-{K}ermadec subduction zone. {N}eogene tectonics of the region near {N}ew {C}aledonia was dominated by the eastwards retreat of {T}onga-{K}ermadec subduction, leading to the opening of a back-arc basin east of {N}ew {C}aledonia, and the initiation and southwestwards advance of the {N}ew {H}ebrides-{V}anuatu subduction zone towards {N}ew {C}aledonia.},
