Located in south-eastern Brazil, Vale do Ribeira became known first for its minerals, then for its water resources, biodiversity and arable land. Since colonial times, these assets have been the target of different systems of appropriation, which have exerted strong pressure on worker - who went from being slaves in the past to "family farmers" in the present - and natural resources. %S Gender, Development and Social Change %$ 098 ; 106 ; 095
