  abstract = {{T}he filmy fern genus {T}richomanes mainly comprises {N}eotropical species and a few taxa in {A}frica and the western {I}ndian {O}cean. {T}he aim of this study is to infer the phylogenetic placement of all five {A}fro-{M}alagasy taxa in the genus and to investigate their history via an expanded and dated phylogenetic analysis including 39 species representing over half the diversity of the genus. {T}he results support the monophyly of {T}richomanes including all the sampled species attributed to the genus, but also suggest the inclusion of the species {A}brodictyum cellulosum, revealing a morphological diversity of the genus greater than what was traditionally recognized, and highlighting the importance of the campanulate sorus as a generic diagnostic character. {T}o accommodate those new phylogenetic results and morphological investigations, we describe a new subgenus {A}frotrichomanes grouping the {A}fro-{M}alagasy taxa (except {T}. crenatum). {T}he dated history of the genus among the trichomanoids suggests at least two origins for the {P}alaeotropical species. {A} recent {C}ainozoic colonization from the {N}eotropics towards {A}frica gave rise to the {W}est {A}frican taxon {T}. crenatum, and a possible {M}esozoic vicariance event gave rise to subgenus {A}frotrichomanes. {T}he low species diversity of the genus in the {A}fro-{M}alagasy region is discussed.},
