@article{fdi:010083953, title = {{E}valuation of the re-emergence risk of human {A}frican trypanosomiasis in the {S}outhwestern {B}urkina {F}aso, a gold-bearing mutation area}, author = {{S}omda, {M}. {B}. and {K}abore, {J}. and {K}arambiri, {S}. {M}. and {D}ama, {E}. and {D}abire, {D}. and {C}ompaore, {C}. {F}. {A}. and {S}alou, {E}. {W}. and {I}lboudo, {H}. and {H}ouaga, {I}. and {C}ourtin, {F}abrice and {B}elem, {A}. {M}. {G}. and {J}amonneau, {V}incent and {B}engaly, {Z}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}urpose {T}he boom in {B}urkina {F}aso's artisanal gold mining since 2007 has attracted populations from {C}ote d'{I}voire and {G}uinea, which are the {W}est {A}frican countries most affected by human {A}frican trypanosomiasis ({HAT}) and therefore increases its risk of re-emergence. {O}ur aim was to update the {HAT} data in {B}urkina {F}aso in the risk of the re-emergence context with the advent of artisanal gold mining. {M}ethods {T}he study was carried out in the southwestern {B}urkina {F}aso where entomological surveys were conducted using biconical traps in {M}arch 2017. {F}ollow by an active medical survey in {A}pril 2017, which was targeted the gold panners in 7 villages closer to artisanal gold sites, using {CATT}, mini-anion exchange centrifugation technique, trypanolysis test ({TL}) and {ELISA} test to measure human/tsetse contacts. {T}he buffy coat technique and the {TL} were also applied in pigs to check their reservoir role of human trypanosomes. {R}esults {O}ur results have shown no case of {HAT} among 958 individuals tested and all the 50 pigs were also negative, but the level of antibodies against tsetse saliva evidenced by {ELISA} revealed low human/tsetse contact. {M}oreover, gold panners practise agriculture and breeding in an infected tsetse area, which are increased the risk. {C}onclusion {O}ur results illustrate that the risk of re-emergence is low. {T}he passive surveillance system implemented in 2015 in southwestern {B}urkina {F}aso is needed to increase the sentinel sites to better cover this area by taking into account the gold mining. {F}inally, awareness-raising activities are needed among populations about {HAT}.}, keywords = {{H}uman {A}frican trypanosomiasis ; {R}isk of re-emergence ; {A}rtisanal gold mining ; {P}assive surveillance ; {B}urkina {F}aso ; {BURKINA} {FASO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}cta {P}arasitologica}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[9 p.]}, ISSN = {1230-2821}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1007/s11686-021-00512-2}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083953}, }
