@article{fdi:010083880, title = {{P}arasitic nematodes of the genus {S}yphacia {S}eurat, 1916 infecting {C}ricetidae in the {B}ritish {I}sles : the enigmatic status of {S}yphacia nigeriana}, author = {{B}ehnke, {J}. {M}. and {S}tewart, {A}. and {S}males, {L}. and {C}ooper, {G}. and {L}owe, {A}. and {K}insella, {J}. {M}. and {B}ajer, {A}. and {D}wuznik-{S}zarek, {D}. and {H}erman, {J}. and {F}enn, {J}. and {C}atalano, {S}. and {D}iagne, {C}hristophe {A}midi and {W}ebster, {J}. {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}xyurid nematodes ({S}yphacia spp.) from bank ({M}yodes glareolus) and field/common ({M}icrotus spp.) voles, from disparate geographical sites in the {B}ritish {I}sles, were examined morphologically and genetically. {T}he genetic signatures of 118 new isolates are provided, based primarily on the r{DNA} internal transcribed spacers ({ITS}1-5.8{S}-{ITS}2) region and for representative isolates also on the small subunit 18{S} r{DNA} region and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox-1) gene locus. {G}enetic data on worms recovered from {M}icrotus spp. from the {E}uropean mainland and from other rodent genera from the {P}alaearctic, {N}orth {A}merica and {W}est {A}frica are also included. {W}e test historical hypotheses indicating that {S}. nigeriana is a generalist species, infecting a range of different rodent genera. {O}ur results establish that {S}. nigeriana is a parasite of both bank and field voles in the {B}ritish {I}sles. {A}n identical genotype was also recorded from {H}ubert's multimammate mouse ({M}astomys huberti) from {S}enegal, but {M}astomys spp. from {W}est {A}frica were additionally parasitized by a related, although genetically distinct {S}yphacia species. {W}e found no evidence for {S}. petrusewiczi in voles from the {B}ritish {I}sles but isolates from {R}ussia and {N}orth {A}merica were genetically distinct and formed their own separate deep branch in maximum likelihood molecular phylogenetic trees.}, keywords = {{C}lethrionomys glareolus ; cox-1 gene ; {M}icrotus agrestis ; {M}yodes glareolus ; oxyurid nematodes ; r{DNA} ({ITS}-1-5.8{S}-{ITS}2) ; 18{S} r{DNA} ; {S}yphacia nigeriana ; {S}yphacia petrusewiczi ; {ROYAUME} {UNI}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}arasitology}, volume = {149}, numero = {1}, pages = {76--94}, ISSN = {0031-1820}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1017/s0031182021001578}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083880}, }
