@article{fdi:010083857, title = {{A}n atypical class of non-coding small {RNA}s is produced in rice leaves upon bacterial infection}, author = {{R}eshetnyak, {G}. and {J}acobs, {J}. {M}. and {A}uguy, {F}lorence and {S}ciallano, {C}. and {C}laude, {L}. and {M}edina, {C}. and {P}erez-{Q}uintero, {A}. {L}. and {C}omte, {A}urore and {T}homas, {E}. and {B}ogdanove, {A}. and {K}oebnik, {R}alf and {S}zurek, {B}oris and {D}ievart, {A}. and {B}rugidou, {C}hristophe and {L}acombe, {S}{\'e}verine and {C}unnac, {S}{\'e}bastien}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{N}on-coding small {RNA}s (s{RNA}) act as mediators of gene silencing and regulate plant growth, development and stress responses. {E}arly insights into plant s{RNA}s established a role in antiviral defense and they are now extensively studied across plant-microbe interactions. {H}ere, s{RNA} sequencing discovered a class of s{RNA} in rice ({O}ryza sativa) specifically associated with foliar diseases caused by {X}anthomonas oryzae bacteria. {X}anthomonas-induced small {RNA}s (xis{RNA}s) loci were distinctively upregulated in response to diverse virulent strains at an early stage of infection producing a single duplex of 20-22 nt s{RNA}s. xis{RNA}s production was dependent on the {T}ype {III} secretion system, a major bacterial virulence factor for host colonization. xis{RNA} loci overlap with annotated transcripts sequences, with about half of them encoding protein kinase domain proteins. {A} number of the corresponding rice cis-genes have documented functions in immune signaling and xis{RNA} loci predominantly coincide with the coding sequence of a conserved kinase motif. xis{RNA}s exhibit features of small interfering {RNA}s and their biosynthesis depend on canonical components {O}s{DCL}1 and {O}s{HEN}1. xis{RNA} induction possibly mediates post-transcriptional gene silencing but they do not broadly suppress cis-genes expression on the basis of m{RNA}-seq data. {O}verall, our results identify a group of unusual s{RNA}s with a potential role in plant-microbe interactions.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {11}, numero = {1}, pages = {24141 [20 ]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1038/s41598-021-03391-9}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083857}, }
