@article{fdi:010083796, title = {{F}avipiravir inhibits {M}ayaro virus infection in mice}, author = {{B}engue, {M}ich{\`e}le and {P}intong, {A}. and {L}i{\'e}geois, {F}lorian and {N}ougairede, {A}. and {H}amel, {R}odolphe and {P}ompon, {J}ulien and {L}amballerie, {X}. de and {R}oques, {P}. and {C}houmet, {V}. and {M}iss{\'e}, {D}oroth{\'e}e}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ayaro virus ({MAYV}) is an emergent alphavirus that causes {MAYV} fever. {I}t is often associated with debilitating symptoms, particularly arthralgia and myalgia. {MAYV} infection is becoming a considerable health issue that, unfortunately, lacks a specific antiviral treatment. {F}avipiravir, a broad-spectrum antiviral drug, has recently been shown to exert anti-{MAYV} activity in vitro. {I}n the present study, the potential of {F}avipiravir to inhibit {MAYV} replication in an in vivo model was evaluated. {I}mmunocompetent mice were orally administrated 300 mg/kg/dose of {F}avipiravir at pre-, concurrent-, or post-{MAYV} infection. {T}he results showed a significant reduction in infectious viral particles and viral {RNA} transcripts in the tissues and blood of the pre- and concurrently treated infected mice. {A} significant reduction in the presence of both viral {RNA} transcript and infectious viral particles in the tissue and blood of pre- and concurrently treated infected mice was observed. {B}y contrast, {F}avipiravir treatment post-{MAYV} infection did not result in a reduction in viral replication. {I}nterestingly, {F}avipiravir strongly decreased the blood levels of the liver disease markers aspartate- and alanine aminotransferase in the pre- and concurrently treated {MAYV}-infected mice. {T}aken together, these results suggest that {F}avipiravir is a potent antiviral drug when administered in a timely manner.}, keywords = {alphavirus ; arbovirus ; mayaro ; favipiravir ; antiviral drug}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{V}iruses}, volume = {13}, numero = {11}, pages = {2213 [17 ]}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.3390/v13112213}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083796}, }
