@article{fdi:010083606, title = {{A} method for rapid determination of moment magnitude {M}-w for moderate to large earthquakes from the near-field spectra of strong-motion records ({MWSYNTH})}, author = {{D}elouis, {B}. and {C}harlety, {J}. and {V}all{\'e}e, {M}artin}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}eismic moment and the corresponding moment magnitude {M}-w are classically obtained from the spectrum of far-field body waves. {N}ear-field records are generally not used for that purpose, particularly in the case of large earthquakes because different types of wave arrive simultaneously, preventing the definition of a simple relation between the seismic moment and the spectrum. {W}e developed an original method to determine {M}w from the displacement spectra of near-field records. {T}he spectral amplitude at low frequency obtained from the real records is compared to that of synthetic records computed using kinematic rupture models scaled with {M}-w. {S}ynthetic records are computed and averaged for various fault orientations and for epicentral distances ranging from 1 to 100 km. {T}he initial portion of the spectrum affected by baseline shift in the acceleration records is automatically identified and removed by high-pass filtering using a cutoff frequency adapted to each station. {T}he synthetic spectral values as a function of moment magnitude, epicentral distance, and filtering are computed only once and stored in tables. {T}he spectral amplitudes of the real records are simply interpolated in the tables of synthetic data, allowing a fast determination of {M}-w. {T}he method has been validated using 22 shallow earthquakes (depth < 50 km) with magnitude ranging from 3.9 to 7.7. {W}e show that a window of 80 sec of signal after the earthquake origin time provides robust values of {M}-w for the whole magnitude range considered here. {S}horter time windows may be used but with {M}w underestimated for large events. {T}he method is well suited for near real-time fast determination of {M}-w.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}ulletin of the {S}eismological {S}ociety of {A}merica}, volume = {99}, numero = {3}, pages = {1827--1840}, ISSN = {0037-1106}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1785/0120080234}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083606}, }
