@article{fdi:010083479, title = {{R}ole of pelagic crustaceans in the diet of the longnose lancetfish {A}lepisaurus ferox in the {S}eychelles waters}, author = {{P}otier, {M}ichel and {M}{\'e}nard, {F}r{\'e}d{\'e}ric and {C}herel, {Y}. and {L}orrain, {A}nne and {S}abati{\'e}, {R}. and {M}arsac, {F}rancis}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he role of pelagic crustaceans in the diet of the longnose lancetfish {A}lepisaurus ferox was investigated from stomach content analysis of fish collected in the waters surrounding the {S}eychelles {A}rchipelago in the western {I}ndian {O}cean. {C}rustaceans accounted for 88.4% by prey number and 73.7% by reconstituted mass during the {S}outh-{W}est monsoon season. {D}uring the {N}orth-{E}ast monsoon season, crustaceans remained the main prey group and accounted for 63.7% by prey number and 46% by reconstituted mass. {T}here was a clear seasonal pattern with the portunid crab {C}harybdis smithii predominating during the {S}outh-{W}est monsoon season and the pelagic stomatopod {N}atosquilla investigatoris during the {N}orth-{E}ast monsoon season. {T}his pattern likely reflects variations in prey availability linked to current movements around the {S}eychelles {A}rchipelago. {M}ost of the prey consisted of slow-swimming and small individuals, which occur in dense swarms during the pelagic phase of their life history. {T}he dietary trends of lancetfish are consistent with opportunistic feeding on the most abundant prey. {T}hey exploit short food chains based on carnivorous crustaceans, and play an important role in the pelagic trophic functioning of the western {I}ndian {O}cean.}, keywords = {crustaceans ; feeding habits ; lancetfish ; seasonality ; {S}eychelles}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}frican {J}ournal of {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {29}, numero = {1}, pages = {113--122}, ISSN = {1814-232{X}}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.2989/{AJMS}.2007.29.1.10.75}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083479}, }
