@article{fdi:010083462, title = {{A}ntiplasmodial activity of {N}ew {C}aledonia and {V}anuatu traditional medicines}, author = {{H}nawia, {E}. and {H}assani, {L}. and {D}eharo, {E}ric and {C}hevalley, {S}{\'e}verine and {W}aikedre, {J}ean and {C}abalion, {P}ierre and {B}ourdy, {G}enevi{\`e}ve and {V}alentin, {A}. and {J}ullian, {V}al{\'e}rie and {F}ogliani, {B}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjective: {T}he aim of this research work is to select plants used in {M}elanesian traditional medicine, in {N}ew {C}aledonia and {V}anuatu, which should be a promising source for the isolation of new antimalarial drugs. {M}aterials and methods: {F}orty-seven plant extracts belonging to 12 families, traditionally used by the {M}elanesian people or belonging to an antimalarial known genus, were screened in vitro for antimalarial activity on {P}lasmodium falciparum chloroquine ({CQ})-resistant ({F}c{B}1) and {CQ}-sensitive ({HB}3) strains. {T}hey were also tested for their inhibitory effects on a protein kinase ({P}fnek) and their cytotoxicity on human breast adenocarcinoma ({MCF}7) cells. {R}esults: {A}mong all extracts, four displayed strong in vitro activities against {P}. falciparum: {G}ardenia urvillei {M}ontrouzier, {S}cleria polycarpa {B}oeckeler, {T}erminalia catappa {L}. and {A}cronychia laevis {J}.{R}. & {J}.{G}. {F}orster, the latter being also toxic on {MCF}7 cells. {E}xcept for the extracts of {S}. polycarpa, all others that were active on {P}. falciparum, also possess an inhibitory effect on {P}fnek. {D}iscussion and conclusion: {T}hese results confirm that ethnopharmacology is an excellent approach for such investigations. {T}he two countries considered clearly present advantages in the field. {I}ndeed, local populations keep their traditional knowledge alive, and their flora is exceptionally rich. {I}n {N}ew {C}aledonia, the high endemicity rate (74%) ranks the island as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. {A}s a consequence, chances to discover new active natural compounds are also high.}, keywords = {{A}cronychia laevis ; {G}ardenia urvillei ; medicinal plants ; {M}elanesia ; {MCF}7 cells ; {P}fnek ; {P}lasmodium falciparum ; {S}cleria polycarpa ; {T}erminalia catappa}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}harmaceutical {B}iology}, volume = {49}, numero = {4}, pages = {369--376}, ISSN = {1388-0209}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.3109/13880209.2010.517541}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083462}, }
