@article{fdi:010083220, title = {{D}ietary diversity indicators and their associations with dietary adequacy and health outcomes : a systematic scoping review}, author = {{V}erger, {E}ric and {L}e {P}ort, {A}gnes and {B}orderon, {A}. and {B}ourbon, {G}. and {M}oursi, {M}. and {S}avy, {M}athilde and {M}ariotti, {F}. and {M}artin-{P}r{\'e}vel, {Y}ves}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{D}ietary diversity has long been recognized as a key component of diet quality and many dietary diversity indicators ({DDI}s) have been developed. {T}his systematic scoping review aimed to present a comprehensive inventory of {DDI}s and summarize evidence linking {DDI}s and dietary adequacy or health outcomes in adolescents and adults. {T}wo search strategies were developed to identify peer-reviewed articles published in {E}nglish up until {J}une 2018 and were applied to {M}edline, {W}eb of {S}cience, and {S}copus. {A} 2-stage screening process was used to select the studies to be reviewed. {F}our types of {DDI}s were identified among 161 articles, the majority of them belonging to the food group-based indicator type (n = 106 articles). {F}ifty studies indicated that {DDI}s were proxies of nutrient adequacy, but there was a lack of evidence about their relation with nutrients to limit. {A}ssociations between {DDI}s and health outcomes were largely inconsistent among 137 studies, especially when the outcomes studied were body weight (n = 60) and noncommunicable diseases (n = 41). {W}e conclude that the ability of {DDI}s to reflect diet quality was found to be principally limited to micronutrient adequacy and that {DDI}s do not readily relate to health outcomes. {T}hese findings have implications for studies in low- and lower-middle-income economies where {DDI}s are often used to assess dietary patterns and overall diet quality.}, keywords = {dietary diversity ; indicators ; nutrition ; diet quality ; health outcomes ; body weight ; noncommunicable diseases ; adolescent ; adult}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}dvances in {N}utrition}, volume = {12}, numero = {5}, pages = {1659--1672}, ISSN = {2161-8313}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1093/advances/nmab009}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083220}, }
