@article{fdi:010083022, title = {{A}n overview of non-commercial flows in contemporary {V}ietnam}, author = {{P}annier, {E}mmanuel}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his paper deals with non-commercial flow in {V}ietnam, specifically all presents and exchanges (in kind or in money) based upon interpersonal relationships that take place outside both the commercial marketplace and the official {S}tate channels. {B}ased on empirical surveys conducted in rural northern {V}ietnam combined with other scholars' case studies on social exchanges in rural and urban areas, this paper argues that non-commercial transactions in general and gift-giving practices in particular occupy a prominent place in {V}ietnamese people's everyday life and reflect the importance of personal relationships in today's {V}ietnamese sociality. {T}he first part describes, through a "descriptive catalog" of non-commercial transactions, the various forms and practices of social exchanges in {V}ietnam. {T}he second part examines the main features, the principles and the functions of {V}ietnamese non-commercial flow. {T}his analysis shows that general patterns of non-commercial flow are mutual aid (giúp d?), reciprocity (có di có l?i), moral obligation (tình nghia) and indebtedness (n?). {T}hese characteristic features attest that the system entails a utilitarian dimension strongly connected to a social function, consisting of cementing and maintaining quan h? tình c?m, which denote personal relations filled with sentiments, obligations and trust. {F}inally, {I} hypothesize that, because the non-commercial flow fulfils both economic and social functions which appear to be central in the {V}ietnamese social order, interpersonal exchanges widely contribute to the production-reproduction process of the society at the local level. {T}hus, in a context of the global modernization of society marked by the development of {S}tate laws and market rules, social exchanges and personal relationships still play a predominant role in the organization and the regulation of the society.}, keywords = {{VIET} {NAM} ; {NAM} {DINH} {PROVINCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{VNU} {J}ournal of {S}ocial {S}ciences and {H}umanities}, volume = {1}, numero = {3}, pages = {229--245}, ISSN = {2354-1172}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1172/vjossh.v1i3.25}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083022}, }
