  abstract = {{N}ew limnogeological results ({L}aguna {M}ar {C}hiquita, 30°{S}) at the middle latitudes in the subtropical {P}ampean plains of {S}outhern {S}outh {A}merica are used to establish comparisons with records spanning {L}ate {G}lacial times and the {H}olocene covering the {N}orthern {A}ndean {P}atagonia and the {E}xtra {A}ndean {S}outhern {P}atagonia. {H}istorical and archaeological data were also used to enlarge existing environmental reconstructions in the central plains of {S}outhern {S}outh {A}merica. {T}wo groups of climate records - at both sides of the {A}rid {D}iagonal- can be distinguished according to their hydrological response during dominant warm or cold climatic phases. {T}he first group includes records from the {P}ampean region and allows to reconstruct the past activity of the {S}outh {A}merica {M}onsoonal {S}ystem. {T}he second group includes archives of the {P}atagonian climate, as well as the {S}alinas del {B}ebedero, and provides a record of past changes in the strength and latitudinal position of the {S}outhern {W}esterlies.},
