@article{fdi:010082793, title = {{T}axonomy and distribution of deep-sea bigscales and whalefishes ({T}eleostei : {S}tephanoberycoidei) collected off {N}ortheastern {B}razil, including seamounts and oceanic islands}, author = {{A}fonso, {G}. {V}. {F}. and {D}i {D}ario, {F}. and {E}duardo, {L}. {N}. and {L}ucena-{F}redou, {F}. and {B}ertrand, {A}rnaud and {M}incarone, {M}. {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{D}espite the increasing number of studies on the systematics of the {S}tephanoberycoidei (bigscales, pricklefishes, gibberfishes, hispidoberycids, and whalefishes) globally, knowledge about the diversity and distribution of the group in the western {S}outh {A}tlantic still remains fragmentary. {I}n this study, we present new anatomical (meristic and morphometric) and distributional data for 18 species of the {S}tephanoberycoidei based on the examination of 150 specimens recently collected during the {ABRACOS} ({A}coustics along the {BRA}zilian {CO}a{S}t) expeditions off northeastern {B}razil, including the {R}ocas {A}toll, {F}ernando de {N}oronha {A}rchipelago, and the seamounts off {R}io {G}rande do {N}orte {S}tate, and additional museum specimens. {I}n the {M}elamphaidae, remarks on the taxonomy of {M}elamphaes polylepis and of the {P}oromitra crassiceps and {P}. megalops species groups are made based on specimens examined. {I}n addition, {S}copeloberyx opercularis, currently considered as a junior synonym of {S}copeloberyx robustus, is recognized as a valid species. {A}mong the species identified, nine have their distributions extended in the western {S}outh {A}tlantic based on confirmed records: {M}elamphaes polylepis, {M}. typhlops, {P}oromitra megalops, {P}oromitra sp., {S}copeloberyx opercularis, {S}copeloberyx opisthopterus, {S}copelogadus mizolepis, {C}etostoma regani, and {R}ondeletia loricata. {E}ight further species are reported for the first time in {B}razilian waters: {C}etomimus sp. 1, {C}etomimus sp. 2, {D}itropichthys storeri, {G}yrinomimus bruuni, {M}elamphaes eulepis, {M}. leprus, {M}. longivelis, and {M}elamphaes sp. {A}dditional remarks on the taxonomy and distribution of the {S}tephanoberycoidei in the western {S}outh {A}tlantic are also provided.}, keywords = {{BRESIL} ; {NORDESTE} ; {ATLANTIQUE} {SUD} ; {ROCAS} {ATOLL} ; {FERNANDO} {DE} {NORONHA} {ARCHIPEL} ; {RIO} {GRANDE} {DO} {NORTE} {MONT} {SOUS} {MARIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}chthyology and {H}erpetology}, volume = {109}, numero = {2}, pages = {467--488}, ISSN = {2766-1512}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1643/i2020069}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010082793}, }
