@article{fdi:010082765, title = {{H}ighly restricted dispersal in habitat-forming seaweed may impede natural recovery of disturbed populations}, author = {{R}iquet, {F}. and {D}e {K}uyper, {C}. {A}. and {F}auvelot, {C}{\'e}cile and {A}iroldi, {L}. and {P}lanes, {S}. and {F}raschetti, {S}. and {M}acic, {V}. and {M}ilchakova, {N}. and {M}angialajo, {L}. and {B}ottin, {L}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}ystoseira sensu lato ({C}lass {P}haeophyceae, {O}rder {F}ucales, {F}amily {S}argassaceae) forests play a central role in marine {M}editerranean ecosystems. {O}ver the last decades, {C}ystoseira s.l. suffered from a severe loss as a result of multiple anthropogenic stressors. {I}n particular, {G}ongolaria barbata has faced multiple human-induced threats, and, despite its ecological importance in structuring rocky communities and hosting a large number of species, the natural recovery of {G}. barbata depleted populations is uncertain. {H}ere, we used nine microsatellite loci specifically developed for {G}. barbata to assess the genetic diversity of this species and its genetic connectivity among fifteen sites located in the {I}onian, the {A}driatic and the {B}lack {S}eas. {I}n line with strong and significant heterozygosity deficiencies across loci, likely explained by {W}ahlund effect, high genetic structure was observed among the three seas ({ENA} corrected {F}-{ST} = 0.355, {IC} = [0.283, 0.440]), with an estimated dispersal distance per generation smaller than 600 m, both in the {A}driatic and {B}lack {S}ea. {T}his strong genetic structure likely results from restricted gene flow driven by geographic distances and limited dispersal abilities, along with genetic drift within isolated populations. {T}he presence of genetically disconnected populations at small spatial scales (< 10 km) has important implications for the identification of relevant conservation and management measures for {G}. barbata: each population should be considered as separated evolutionary units with dedicated conservation efforts.}, keywords = {{MEDITERRANEE} ; {ADRIATIQUE} ; {MER} {IONIENNE} ; {MER} {NOIRE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {11}, numero = {1}, pages = {16792 [15 p.]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1038/s41598-021-96027-x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010082765}, }
