@article{fdi:010082681, title = {{S}table isotope and quality of groundwater around {K}sob sub-basin, {E}ssaouira, {M}orocco}, author = {{B}ahir, {M}. and {E}l {M}ountassir, {O}. and {O}uazar, {D}. and {C}hehbouni, {A}bdelghani and {C}arreira, {P}. {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{G}roundwater resources are playing an increasingly vital role in water supply for domestic and irrigation purposes in the {E}ssaouira basin. {T}he main objective of this study is to assess the quality of groundwater for the population of the {E}ssaouira basin to determine its suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes. {A} total of 28 water samples were collected in {M}arch 2019 for chemical analysis. {A}ccording to {P}iper trilinear diagram, two dominant hydrochemical facies, mixed {C}a-{M}g-{C}l and {N}a-{C}l type, were identified. {T}he final integrated {WQI} map shows two priority classes such as poor and very poor groundwater quality zones of the study area and provides a guideline for the suitability of groundwater for domestic purposes. {R}esults of {WQI} showed that 60.7% of the samples indicate poor water quality, while 28.6% of groundwater sampled in the field of research had very poor water quality, only 10.7% of samples are unsuitable for drinking. {T}o test the suitability of groundwater for irrigation, four indices are used; they are sodium adsorption ratio ({SAR}), sodium percentage ({N}a%), magnesium hazard ({MH}), and permeability index ({PI}). {F}or irrigation suitability, the study proved that most sampling sites are suitable while less than 3.57% are unsuitable for irrigation. {T}he presence of evaporation and marine intrusion leading to an increase in salinity in the downstream part of the study area was confirmed by the content of stable isotopes (delta {O}-18, delta {H}-2), which demonstrated the role of recent precipitation in the recharge of the aquifer.}, keywords = {{I}sotope stable ; {GIS} ; {G}roundwater quality ; {E}ssaouira basin ; {WQI} ; {MAROC} ; {ESSAOUIRA} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}ustainable {W}ater {R}esources {M}anagement}, volume = {7}, numero = {5}, pages = {73 [13 p.]}, ISSN = {2363-5037}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1007/s40899-021-00553-5}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010082681}, }
