@article{fdi:010082507, title = {{GECOMARS} : {I}nternational workshop on ecosystem based management, {M}arseille, {F}rance, 4-5 {F}ebruary 2020}, author = {{B}elloni, {B}. and {A}struch, {P}. and {L}e {D}ir{\'e}ach, {L}. and {C}hangeux, {T}homas and {B}oudouresque, {C}.{F}.}, editor = {{B}elloni, {B}. and {A}struch, {P}. and {L}e {D}ir{\'e}ach, {L}. and {C}hangeux, {T}homas and {B}oudouresque, {C}.{F}.}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he 'species-by-species', or 'stock-by-stock' approach in the case of fisheries, characterized the 20th century ecology. {T}he ecosystem-based approach, which in the case of fisheries emerged at the end of the 20th century, represents the 'new frontier', the 21st century revolution in ecology. {A}ccording to the {M}arine {S}trategy {F}ramework {D}irective, the ecosystem-based approach ({EA}) should enable us to understand and assess the functioning of marine and coastal ecosystems and their dependent services. {A}s an integrated management process, this strategy promotes both conservation and sustainable use and provides benefits in a more equitable way via the social-ecosystem concept. {F}irst used for fisheries management, the {EA} has become a valuable tool for ecosystem services assessment and for marine protected areas ({MPA}) monitoring and governance, especially in the {M}editerranean {S}ea but it could also be considered in the spatial planning and the management of other coastal areas. {T}he perception that humans belong to ecosystems (socio-ecosystems) is a key feature of the {EA} and the catastrophic events due to anthropic pressures, in the global change context, remind us the price to pay. {T}he aim of organizing a {W}orkshop on {E}cosystembased {M}anagement in {M}arseille was to create the opportunity to gather managers, stakeholders and scientists to discuss this crucial topic within the framework of the {I}ntegrated {LIFE} {M}arha project, headed by the {F}rench {O}ffice of {B}iodiversity and funded by the {E}uropean {U}nion. {A}ix {M}arseille {U}niversity, {P}yth{\'e}as and the {M}editerranean {I}nstitute of {O}ceanography, the {M}arseille's city {T}ourism {O}ffice and {T}oulon {P}rovence {M}etropole have also supported the organization of the event. {T}he upcoming challenge, in the current {G}lobal change, is to move forward to a suitable and carbon free management and use of our natural ecosystems. {O}nly a concern at the {E}cosystem scale will make it possible.}, keywords = {{GUYANE} {FRANCAISE} ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {FRANCE} ; {MEDITERRANEE} ; {ADRIATIQUE} {MER}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{V}ie et {M}ilieu = {L}ife and {E}nvironment}, volume = {70}, numero = {3-4}, pages = {315}, ISSN = {0240-8759}, year = {2020}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010082507}, }
