@article{fdi:010082318, title = {{R}ecent expansion of marine protected areas matches with home range of grey reef sharks}, author = {{B}onnin, {L}. and {M}ouillot, {D}. and {B}oussarie, {G}. and {R}obbins, {W}. {D}. and {K}iszka, {J}. {J}. and {D}agorn, {L}aurent and {V}igliola, {L}aurent}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{D}ramatic declines in reef shark populations have been documented worldwide in response to human activities. {M}arine {P}rotected {A}reas ({MPA}s) offer a useful mechanism to protect these species and their roles in coral reef ecosystems. {T}he effectiveness of {MPA}s notably relies on compliance together with sufficient size to encompass animal home range. {H}ere, we measured home range of 147 grey reef sharks, {C}archarhinus amblyrhynchos, using acoustic telemetry in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}he distribution of home range was then compared to local {MPA} sizes. {W}e report a home range of 12 km(2) of reef for the species with strong differences between adult males (21 km(2)), adult females (4.4 km(2)) and juveniles (6.2 km(2) for males, 2.7 km(2) for females). {W}hereas local historic {MPA} size seemed adequate to protect reef shark home range in general, these were clearly too small when considering adult males only, which is consistent with the reported failure of {MPA}s to protect sharks in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {F}ortunately, the recent implementation of several orders of magnitude larger {MPA}s in {N}ew {C}aledonia and abroad show that recent {I}ndo-{P}acific {MPA}s are now sufficiently large to protect the home ranges of this species, including males, across its geographical range. {H}owever, protection efforts are concentrated in a few regions and cannot provide adequate protection at a global scale.}, keywords = {{NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {MER} {DE} {CORAIL} ; {ENTRECASTEAUX} {ATOLL} ; {CHESTERFIELD} {ATOLL} ; {BELLONA} {ATOLL} ; {GRAND} {LAGON} {NORD} ; {NOUMEA} {LAGON}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {11}, numero = {1}, pages = {14221 [11 ]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1038/s41598-021-93426-y}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010082318}, }
