@article{fdi:010082073, title = {{S}eagrass ecosystems of the {P}acific {I}sland {C}ountries and {T}erritories : a global bright spot}, author = {{M}c{K}enzie, {L}. {J}. and {Y}oshida, {R}. {L}. and {A}ini, {J}. {W}. and {A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge and {C}olin, {P}. {L}. and {C}ullen-{U}nsworth, {L}. {C}. and {H}ughes, {A}. {T}. and {P}ayri, {C}laude and {R}ota, {M}. and {S}haw, {C}. and {S}kelton, {P}. {A}. and {T}suda, {R}. {T}. and {V}uki, {V}. {C}. and {U}nsworth, {R}. {K}. {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}eagrass ecosystems exist throughout {P}acific {I}sland {C}ountries and {T}erritories ({PICT}s). {D}espite this area covering nearly 8% of the global ocean, information on seagrass distribution, biogeography, and status remains largely absent from the scientific literature. {W}e confirm 16 seagrass species occur across 17 of the 22 {PICT}s with the highest number in {M}elanesia, followed by {M}icronesia and {P}olynesia respectively. {T}he greatest diversity of seagrass occurs in {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea (13 species), and attenuates eastward across the {P}acific to two species in {F}rench {P}olynesia. {W}e conservatively estimate seagrass extent to be 1446.2 km2, with the greatest extent (84%) in {M}elanesia. {W}e find seagrass condition in 65% of {PICT}s increasing or displaying no discernible trend since records began. {M}arine conservation across the region overwhelmingly focuses on coral reefs, with seagrass ecosystems marginalised in conservation legislation and policy. {T}raditional knowledge is playing a greater role in managing local seagrass resources and these approaches are having greater success than contemporary conservation approaches. {I}n a world where the future of seagrass ecosystems is looking progressively dire, the {P}acific {I}slands appears as a global bright spot, where pressures remain relatively low and seagrass more resilient.}, keywords = {{S}eagrass ; {E}cosystem services ; {H}abitats ; {T}hreats ; {R}esilience ; {M}anagement ; {DPSIR} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {MELANESIE} ; {MICRONESIE} ; {POLYNESIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {P}ollution {B}ulletin}, volume = {167}, numero = {}, pages = {112308 [24 p.]}, ISSN = {0025-326{X}}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1016/j.marpolbul.2021.112308}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010082073}, }
