@article{fdi:010081736, title = {{F}irst hydroacoustic assessment of fish abundance and distribution in the shallow sub-basin of {L}ake {T}iticaca}, author = {{L}oayza,{E}. and {B}ertrand, {A}rnaud and {G}uillard, {J}. and {L}a {C}ruz, {L}. and {L}ebourges {D}haussy, {A}nne and {V}argas, {G}. and {L}azzaro, {X}avier}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{F}or the last two decades, a rapid eutrophication process impacts {L}ake {T}iticaca, the largest tropical freshwater lake in {S}outh {A}merica and the main highest {G}reat {L}ake. {T}his is especially notorious in the {B}olivian sector of its shallow {L}ago {M}enor sub-basin. {L}ago {M}enor is deteriorated by the combination of multiple contaminations (domestic, industrial and mining) from untreated wastewater discharged from the urban area of {E}l {A}lto, indiscriminate overfishing, and climate change. {T}hese threats particularly affect the native {A}ndean killifish genus {O}restias, the ecology and dynamics of which require in-depth studies with non-invasive techniques. {H}ere, we use hydroacoustic method to evaluate fish patterns of distribution and abundance in the {L}ago {M}enor. {H}ydroacoustic data were collected during the 2015 rainy season ({N}ovember) with vertical beaming at 120 k{H}z along transects that sum a total length of 140 km. {O}ur results showed that the proxy of fish biomass was linked to {L}ago {M}enor bathymetry. {F}urthermore, the vertical fish biomass proxy was steady from 3 to 20 m. {T}his pilot study provides the first image of fish, mostly {O}restias spp., distribution and opens future studies to deepen knowledge on their ecology and ethology, and regular monitoring of their population and stock for the fisheries assessment in {L}ake {T}iticaca.}, keywords = {{BOLIVIE} ; {LAC} {TITICACA} ; {LAGO} {MENOR} ; {EL} {ALTO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}quaculture and {F}isheries - {H}erald {S}cholarly {O}pen {A}ccess}, volume = {4}, numero = {2}, pages = {034 [6 ]}, ISSN = {2576-5523}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.24966/{AAF}-5523/100034}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010081736}, }
