@article{fdi:010081480, title = {{A} realist synthesis of community-based interventions in vector-borne diseases}, author = {{P}erez, {D}. and {R}obert, {E}. and {P}erez, {E}. {J}. and {V}anlerberghe, {V}. and {L}efevre, {P}. and {R}idde, {V}al{\'e}ry}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}andomized control trials have provided evidence that some community-based interventions ({CBI}s) work in vector-borne diseases ({VBD}s). {C}onversely, there is limited evidence on how well those {CBI}s succeed in producing specific outcomes in different contexts. {T}o conduct a realist synthesis for knowledge translation on this topic, we examined the extent to which realist concepts (context, mechanisms, and outcomes) and their relationships are present in the existing literature on {CBI}s for {VBD}s. {A}rticles on {CBI}s were identified from prior scoping reviews of health interventions for {VBD}s. {C}ontent of the articles was extracted verbatim if it referred either to realist concepts or {CBI} features. {T}he number of articles and the average number of words extracted per category per {CBI} were quantified. {C}ontent of the articles was scrutinized to inductively gather qualitative evidence on the interactions between realist concepts. {W}e reviewed 41 articles on 17 {CBI}s from 12 countries. {T}he average number of words used for mechanisms was much lower than those used for outcomes and context (309,474, and 836, respectively). {T}he average number of words used for mechanisms increased when a {CBI} was described in three or more articles. {T}here were more extensive accounts on {CBI} features than on mechanisms. {I}t was difficult to gather evidence on the interactions among realist concepts from the content of the articles. {S}carce reporting on mechanisms in published articles limits conducting a realist synthesis of {CBI}s in {VBD}s. {M}ore transdisciplinary research that goes beyond the biomedical paradigm is needed to boost the development of intervention mechanisms in this field.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {T}ropical {M}edicine and {H}ygiene}, volume = {104}, numero = {4}, pages = {1202--1210}, ISSN = {0002-9637}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.4269/ajtmh.20-0944}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010081480}, }
