@article{fdi:010081346, title = {{M}itogenomics of the endangered {M}editerranean monk seal ({M}onachus monachus) reveals dramatic loss of diversity and supports historical gene-flow between {A}tlantic and eastern {M}editerranean populations}, author = {{R}ey-{I}glesia, {A}. and {G}aubert, {P}hilippe and {T}hemudo, {G}. {E}. and {P}ires, {R}. and de la {F}uente, {C}. and {F}reitas, {L}. and {A}guilar, {A}. and {B}orrell, {A}. and {K}rakhmalnaya, {T}. and {V}asconcelos, {R}. and {C}ampos, {P}. {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {M}editerranean monk seal {M}onachus monachus is one of the most threatened marine mammals, with only 600-700 individuals restricted to three populations off the coast of {W}estern {S}ahara and {M}adeira ({N}orth {A}tlantic) and between {G}reece and {T}urkey (eastern {M}editerranean). {I}ts original range was from the {B}lack {S}ea (eastern {M}editerranean) to {G}ambia (western {A}frican coast), but was drastically reduced by commercial hunting and human persecution since the early stages of marine exploitation. {W}e here analyse 42 mitogenomes of {M}editerranean monk seals, from across their present and historical geographic ranges to assess the species population dynamics over time. {O}ur data show a decrease in genetic diversity in the last 200 years. {E}xtant individuals presented an almost four-fold reduction in genetic diversity when compared to historical specimens. {W}e also detect, for the first time, a clear segregation between the two {N}orth {A}tlantic populations, {M}adeira and {C}abo {B}lanco, regardless of their geographical proximity. {M}oreover, we show the presence of historical gene-flow between the two water basins, the {A}tlantic {O}cean and the {M}editerranean {S}ea, and the presence of at least one extinct maternal lineage in the {M}editerranean. {O}ur work demonstrates the advantages of using full mitogenomes in phylogeographic and conservation genomic studies of threatened species.}, keywords = {ancient {DNA} ; conservation genetics ; endangered species ; exploitation ; marine mammal ; phylogeography ; pinniped ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {MEDITERRANEE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Z}oological {J}ournal of the {L}innean {S}ociety}, volume = {191}, numero = {4}, pages = {1147--1159}, ISSN = {0024-4082}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1093/zoolinnean/zlaa084}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010081346}, }
