@article{fdi:010081169, title = {{U}pdates on geographical dispersion of {L}eishmania parasites causing cutaneous affections in {A}lgeria}, author = {{I}zri, {A}. and {B}endjaballah-{L}aliam, {A}. and {S}ereno, {D}enis and {A}khoundi, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{L}eishmaniases are neglected tropical diseases of public health concern in {A}lgeria. {T}o update the geographical distribution of {L}eishmania spp. causing cutaneous affection, we examined a set of {G}iemsa-stained smears prepared from skin lesions of the patients suspected to have cutaneous leishmaniasis ({CL}) in various geographical areas in {A}lgeria. {T}he identification of {L}eishmania parasites was performed using microscopy, conventional {PCR}, and {PCR}-{RFLP} ({PCR}-{R}estriction {F}ragment {L}ength {P}olymorphism) targeting {ITS}1-r{DNA}. {A}mong 32 smears provided from 27 suspected patients with cutaneous lesions, no trace of parasites was observed in the smear of three patients using microscopy and molecular approaches. {F}urthermore, four patients presented at least two lesions. {PCR}-{RFLP} confirmed the presence of {L}eishmania in 29 smears prepared from 24 patients. {T}wo biopsies, negative after microscopic examination, were found positive by {PCR}. {O}f these 29 {PCR} positive smears (24 patients), 20 were identified using {RFLP}-{PCR} as {L}. major, two as {L}. tropica, and two as {L}. infantum. {W}e found {L}. major infected patients from {A}in skhouna, {B}iskra, {E}l {M}'hir, {G}hardaia, {M}'{S}ila, and {S}aida, in agreement with previously reported cases. {F}urthermore, we highlighted for the first time, the identification of {L}. major in the patients from {B}ourkika, {B}ou {K}remissa, {B}ou {S}aada {C}lef, {H}ajout, {M}aghnia, {M}edea, {M}enaceur, {M}essad, {M}ostaghanem, {N}ador, {O}ran, and {S}idi {O}kba. {A} phylogenetic reconstruction performed with sequences collected from the {PCR} products confirmed these identifications. {O}ur data provide additional information on the geographical extension of {CL} caused by {L}. tropica and {L}. infantum in {A}lgeria.}, keywords = {cutaneous leishmaniasis ; {L}eishmania major ; {L}eishmania tropica ; {L}eishmania infantum ; {PCR}-{RFLP} ; {ALGERIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}athogens}, volume = {10}, numero = {3}, pages = {267 [12 p.]}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.3390/pathogens10030267}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010081169}, }
