  abstract = {{A} new genus of {G}esneriaceae, {B}opopia {M}unzinger & {J}.{R}.{M}orel gen. nov., is described from {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}he genus is based on {B}. parviflora {M}unzinger & {J}.{R}.{M}orel gen. et sp. nov., a new species collected during an expedition on {M}t {K}atalupaik, in the {N}orth {P}rovince of {N}ew {C}aledonia's main island. {O}riginally considered as a species of {C}oronanthera, our phylogenetic analysis - including 19 species within {C}oronanthereae and two individuals of {B}. parviflora gen. et sp. nov., and using three molecular markers (nuclear r{DNA} {ITS}, and chloroplast regions trn{L}-trn{F} and trn{E}-trn{T}) - showed that the new species is not close to {C}oronanthera in subtribe {C}oronantherinae, but belongs to subtribe {N}egriinae where it is sister to {D}epanthus. {F}rom that genus {B}opopia gen. nov. differs in floral symmetry (zygomorphic vs actinomorphic) and the number of stamens (4 vs 5). {F}rom the other genera of {N}egriinae the new genus differs in the white corolla and its indeterminate thyrse with 3 to 5 levels of branching. {T}he morphological circumscription of the subtribe {N}egriinae is amended to include {B}opopia gen. nov. {T}wo keys are provided, one to the subtribes in the tribe {C}oronanthereae, and one to the genera in subtribe {N}egriinae. {F}ollowing the {IUCN} {R}ed {L}ist categories and criteria, the conservation status of {B}. parviflora gen. et sp. nov. is provisionally assessed as {E}ndangered ({EN}).},
