@article{fdi:010080517, title = {{M}apping artisanal and small-scale gold mining in {S}enegal using {S}entinel 2 data}, author = {{N}gom, {N}. {M}. and {M}baye, {M}. and {B}aratoux, {D}avid and {B}aratoux, {L}enka and {C}atry, {T}hibault and {D}essay, {N}adine and {F}aye, {G}. and {S}ow, {E}. {H}. and {D}ela{\^i}tre, {E}ric}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}rtisanal and small-scale gold mining ({ASGM}) represents a significant economic activity for communities in developing countries. {I}n southeastern {S}enegal, this activity has increased in recent years and has become the main source of income for the local population. {H}owever, it is also associated with negative environmental, social, and health impacts. {C}onsidering the recent development of {ASGM} in {S}enegal and the difficulties of the government in monitoring and regulating this activity, this article proposes a method for detecting and mapping {ASGM} sites in {S}enegal using {S}entinel 2 data and the {G}oogle {E}arth {E}ngine. {T}wo artisanal mining sites in {S}enegal are selected to test this approach. {D}etection and mapping are achieved following a processing pipeline. {P}rincipal component analysis ({PCA}) is applied to determine the optimal period of the year for mapping. {S}eparability and threshold ({SE}a{TH}) is used to determine the optimal bands or spectral indices to discriminate {ASGM} from other land use. {F}inally, automatic classification and mapping of the scenes are achieved with support vector machine ({SVM}) classifier. {T}he results are then validated based on field observations. {T}he {PCA} and examination of spectral signatures as a function of time indicate that the best period for discriminate {ASGM} sites against other types of land use is the end of dry season, when vegetation is minimal. {T}he classification results are presented as a map with different categories of land use. {T}his method could be applied to future {S}entinel scenes to monitor the evolution of mining sites and may also be extrapolated to other relevant areas in the {S}ahel.}, keywords = {artisanal and small-scale gold mining ; {S}entinel 2 ; {G}oogle {E}arth ; {E}ngine ; {SENEGAL} ; {SAHEL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eohealth}, volume = {4}, numero = {12}, pages = {e2020{GH}000310 [21 ]}, ISSN = {2471-1403}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1029/2020gh000310}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010080517}, }
