@article{fdi:010080454, title = {{P}liocene river capture and incision of the northern {A}ltiplano : {M}achu {P}icchu, {P}eru}, author = {{G}erard, {B}. and {A}udin, {L}aurence and {R}obert, {X}avier and {G}autheron, {C}. and van der {B}eek, {P}. and {B}ernet, {M}. and {B}enavente, {C}. and {D}elgado, {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {A}bancay {D}eflection, forming the northern edge of the {A}ltiplano in the {P}eruvian {A}ndes, is a remarkable geomorphological feature marking the along-strike segmentation of the {A}ndes. {L}ittle is known about the timing and spatial distribution of exhumation in this area. {T}o constrain the exhumation history of the {A}bancay {D}eflection and its drivers, we present apatite ({U}-{T}h)/{H}e and fission-track thermochronology data from samples collected along an elevation transect at {M}achu {P}icchu. {G}eomorphological analysis demonstrates recent and continuing drainage reorganization recorded by the spatial distribution of the normalized steepness index (k(sn)) and normalized integrated drainage area (chi) parameters. {T}hermochronologically derived cooling rates are converted into exhumation using regionally constrained geothermal gradients between 16 and 26 degrees {C} km(-1). {T}ime-temperature inversions imply steady and slow exhumation (<0.05 km {M}a(-1)) between 20 and 4 {M}a, followed by rapid exhumation (>0.9 km {M}a(-1)) since 4 {M}a. {T}he timing of rapid exhumation, combined with the geomorphological analysis, suggests that fluvial capture of the previously endorheic {A}ltiplano by the {U}rubamba {R}iver drove recent incision and exhumation. {D}epending on the value of the geothermal gradient used, total exhumation since 4 {M}a can be explained by river incision alone or requires additional exhumation driven by tectonics, possibly associated with movement on the {A}purimac fault.}, keywords = {{PEROU} ; {ANDES} ; {MACHU} {PICHU} ; {URUBAMBA} {COURS} {D}'{EAU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of the {G}eological {S}ociety}, volume = {178}, numero = {2}, pages = {jgs2020--100 [11 ]}, ISSN = {0016-7649}, year = {2021}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010080454}, }
