@article{fdi:010080428, title = {{T}hyroid doses to {F}rench {P}olynesians resulting from atmospheric nuclear weapons tests : estimates based on radiation measurements and population lifestyle data}, author = {{D}rozdovitch, {V}. and {B}ouville, {A}. and {T}aquet, {M}arc and {G}ardon, {J}acques and {X}haard, {C}. and {R}en, {Y}. and {D}oyon, {F}. and de {V}athaire, {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}hyroid doses were estimated for the subjects of a population-based case-control study of thyroid cancer in a population exposed to fallout after atmospheric nuclear weapons tests conducted in {F}rench {P}olynesia between 1966 and 1974. {T}hyroid doses due to (1) intake of {I}-131 and of short-lived radioiodine isotopes ({I}-132, {I}-133, {I}-135) and {T}e-132, (2) external irradiation from gamma-emitting radionuclides deposited on the ground, and (3) ingestion of long-lived {C}s-137 with foodstuffs were reconstructed for each study subject. {T}he dosimetry model that had been used in 2008 in {P}hase {I} of the study was substantially improved with (1) results of radiation monitoring of the environment and foodstuffs, which became available in 2013 for public access, and (2) historical data on population lifestyle related to the period of the tests, which were collected in 2016-2017 using focus-group discussions and key informant interviews. {T}he mean thyroid dose among the study subjects was found to be around 5 m{G}y while the highest dose was estimated to be around 36 m{G}y. {D}oses from {I}-131 intake ranged up to 27 m{G}y, while those from intake of short-lived iodine isotopes ({I}-132, {I}-133, {I}-135) and {T}e-132 ranged up to 14 m{G}y. {T}hyroid doses from external exposure ranged up to 6 m{G}y, and those from internal exposure due to {C}s-137 ingestion did not exceed 1 m{G}y. {I}ntake of {I}-131 was found to be the main pathway for thyroid exposure accounting for 72% of the total dose. {R}esults of this study are being used to evaluate the risk of thyroid cancer among the subjects of the epidemiologic study of thyroid cancer among {F}rench {P}olynesians.}, keywords = {health effects ; nuclear weapons ; radiation dose ; thyroid ; {POLYNESIE} {FRANCAISE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}ealth {P}hysics}, volume = {120}, numero = {1}, pages = {34--55}, ISSN = {0017-9078}, year = {2021}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010080428}, }
