@article{fdi:010080236, title = {{A}verage circulation, seasonal cycle, and mesoscale dynamics of the {P}eru current system : a modeling approach - art. no. {C}10021}, author = {{P}enven, {P}ierrick and {E}chevin, {V}. and {P}asapera, {J}. and {C}olas, {F}. and {T}am, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {[1] {T}he {H}umboldt {C}urrent {S}ystem is the most productive of the eastern boundary currents. {I}n the northern part, the {P}eru {C}urrent {S}ystem ({PCS}) is located between 5 degrees {S} and 20 degrees {S}. {A}long the {P}eruvian coast, an equatorward wind forces a strong coastal upwelling. {A} high resolution model is designed to investigate the mean circulation, the seasonal cycle, and the mesoscale dynamics for the {PCS}. {T}he model is able to reproduce the equatorward {P}eru {C}oastal {C}urrent ({PCC}), the {P}eru {C}hile {U}nder-{C}urrent ({PCUC}) which follows the shelf break towards the pole, and the {P}eru-{C}hile {C}ounter-{C}urrent ({PCCC}) which flows directly towards the south and veers to the west around 15 degrees {S}. {W}hile the upper part of the {PCUC} is close to the surface and might even outcrop as a counter current, the bottom part follows f/{H} isolines. {T}he {PCCC} appears to be directly forced by the cyclonic wind stress curl. {T}he model is able to produce the upwelling front, the cold water tongue which extends toward the equator and the equatorial front as described in the literature. {M}odel seasonal changes in {SST} and {SSH} are compared to measurements. {F}or the central {PCS}, model {EKE} is 10% to 30% lower than the observations. {T}he model eddy diameters follow a strong equatorward increase. {T}he injection length scales, derived from the energy spectra, strongly correlate to the {R}ossby radius of deformation, confirming the predominant role of baroclinic instability. {A}t 3 degrees {S}, the model solution appears to switch from a turbulent oceanic regime to an equatorial regime dominated by zonal currents.}, keywords = {{ZONE} {EQUATORIALE} ; {PEROU} ; {ATLANTIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch {O}ceans}, volume = {110}, numero = {{C}10}, pages = {{NIL}_67--{NIL}_87}, ISSN = {0148-0227}, year = {2005}, DOI = {10.1029/2005{JC}002945}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010080236}, }
