  abstract = {{S}ince its discovery in {N}igeria in 1991, {A}edes albopictus has invaded much of {C}entral {A}frica, a region where {A}e. aegypti also occurs. {T}o assess the relationship between the invasion by {A}e. albopictus and the recent emergence of dengue virus ({DENV}) and chikungunya virus ({CHIKV}), we undertook vector competence experiments on populations collected from {C}ameroon and conducted field investigations during concurrent epidemics of {DENV} and {CHIKV} in {G}abon. {O}verall, infection and dissemination rates were not significantly different between {A}e. albopictus and {A}e. aegypti when exposed to titers of 10(8.1) mosquito infectious dose 50/m{L} and 10(7.5) plaque forming units/m{L} of {DENV} type 2 and {CHIKV}, respectively. {F}ield investigations showed that {A}e. albopictus readily bit man, was abundant, and outnumbered {A}e. aegypti to a large extent in {G}abon, particularly in suburban environments. {N}evertheless, {A}e. aegypti was predominant in the more urbanized central parts of {L}ibreville. {I}n this city, {CHIKV} and {DENV} were detected only in {A}e. albopictus. {T}hese data strongly suggest that {A}e. albopictus acted as the major vector of both viruses in {L}ibreville in 2007, impacting on the epidemiology of {DENV} and {CHIKV} in this area.},
