@article{fdi:010079903, title = {{A}ssessment of a {L}agrangian model using trajectories of oceanographic drifters and fishing devices in the {T}ropical {A}tlantic {O}cean}, author = {{A}memou, {H}. and {K}one, {V}. and {A}man, {A}. and {L}ett, {C}hristophe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n the {T}ropical {A}tlantic {O}cean, we assessed the accuracy of a {L}agrangian model ({I}chthyop) forced with velocity fields from a hydrodynamical model ({CROCO}) and two different remote sensing products ({G}lob{C}urrent and {OSCAR}) using trajectories of oceanographic drifters. {A}dditionally, we evaluated the possibility to expand the drifters data using trajectories of {GPS}-buoy equipped drifting {F}ish {A}ggregating {D}evices ({FAD}s). {T}he observed and simulated trajectories were compared in terms of spatial distribution, velocity distribution and a nondimensional skill score. {F}or the drifters and {FAD}s, the {G}lob{C}urrent and {OSCAR} products lead to similar performances as the {CROCO} model-ouputs in the broad studied domain. {I}n the {G}ulf of {G}uinea, however, the {CROCO} model performed significantly better than the other two because the parent solution of {CROCO} benefited from its communication with a child grid of finer resolution in this region. {O}n average, the simulations lead to an underestimation of the drifter and {FAD} velocities, likely because the spatial resolutions of the forcing products were insufficient and the time frequency at which they were produced were too low to resolve the relevant oceanic processes properly. {W}e found a low skill for all models to simulate {FAD} trajectories, possibly because of the devices vertical structure that prevent {FAD}s from drifting like water parcels. {O}ur results therefore suggest that in the {T}ropical {A}tlantic the {FAD} dataset may not be appropriate to use for corroborating {L}agrangian simulations.}, keywords = {{D}rifter ; {F}ish aggregating device ; {P}article ; {T}rajectory ; {V}elocity ; {M}odel performance ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}rogress in {O}ceanography}, volume = {188}, numero = {}, pages = {102426 [21 ]}, ISSN = {0079-6611}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1016/j.pocean.2020.102426}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010079903}, }
