@article{fdi:010079896, title = {{T}axonomy and toxicity of a bloom-forming {O}streopsis species ({D}inophyceae, {G}onyaulacales) in {T}ahiti island ({S}outh {P}acific {O}cean) : one step further towards resolving the identity of {O}. siamensis}, author = {{C}homerat, {N}. and {B}ilien, {G}. and {V}iallon, {J}. and {H}erve, {F}. and {R}eveillon, {D}. and {H}enry, {K}. and {Z}ubia, {M}. and {V}ieira, {C}. and {U}ng, {A}. and {G}atti, {C}. {M}. {I}. and {R}ou{\'e}, {M}{\'e}lanie and {D}errien, {A}. and {A}mzil, {Z}. and {D}arius, {H}. {T}. and {C}hinain, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}mong dinoflagellates responsible for benthic harmful algal blooms, the genus {O}streopsis primarily described from tropical areas has been increasingly reported from subtropical and temperate areas worldwide. {S}everal species of this toxigenic genus produce analogs of palytoxin, thus representing a major threat to human and environmental health. {T}he taxonomy of several species needs to be clarified as it was based mostly on morphological descriptions leading in some cases to ambiguous interpretations and misidentifications. {T}he present study aims at reporting a benthic bloom that occurred in {A}pril 2019 in {T}ahiti island, {F}rench {P}olynesia. {A} complete taxonomic investigation of the blooming {O}streopsis species was realized using light, epifluorescence and field emission electron microscopy and phylogenetic analyses inferred from {LSU} r{DNA} and {ITS}-5.8{S} r{DNA} regions. {T}oxicity of a natural sample and strains isolated from the bloom was assessed using both neuroblastoma cell-based assay and {LC}-{MS}/{MS} analyses. {M}orphological observations showed that cells were round to oval, large, 58.0-82.5 mu m deep (dorso-ventral length) and 45.7-61.2 mu m wide. {T}he cingulum was conspicuously undulated, forming a `{V}' in ventral view. {T}hecal plates possessed large pores in depressions, with a collar rim. {D}etailed observation also revealed the presence of small thecal pores invisible in {LM}. {P}hylogenetic analyses were congruent and all sequences clustered within the genotype {O}streopsis sp. 6, in a subclade closely related to sequences from the {G}ulf of {T}hailand and {M}alaysia. {N}o toxicity was found on the field sample but all the strains isolated from the bloom were found to be cytotoxic and produced ostreocin {D}, a lower amount of ostreocins {A} and {B} and putatively other compounds. {P}hylogenetic data demonstrate the presence of this species in the {G}ulf of {T}hailand, at the type locality of {O}. siamensis, and morphological data are congruent with the original description and support this identification.}, keywords = {{D}inoflagellate ; {ITS}-5.8{S} r{DNA} ; {LSU} r{DNA} ; {M}icroscopy ; {M}orphology ; {O}streocin ; {P}hylogeny ; {PACIFIQUE} {SUD} ; {TAHITI}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}armful {A}lgae}, volume = {98}, numero = {}, pages = {101888 [20 p.]}, ISSN = {1568-9883}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1016/j.hal.2020.101888}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010079896}, }
