@article{fdi:010079733, title = {{G}enetic diversity among commercial arabica coffee ({C}offea arabica {L}.) varieties in {E}thiopia using simple sequence repeat markers}, author = {{B}enti, {T}. and {G}ebre, {E}. and {T}esfaye, {K}. and {B}erecha, {G}. and {L}ashermes, {P}hilippe and {K}yallo, {M}. and {Y}ao, {N}. {K}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}thiopia is the center of origin and genetic diversity of arabica coffee. {F}orty-two commercial arabica coffee varieties were developed by {J}imma {A}gricultural {R}esearch {C}enter ({JARC}) of {E}thiopian {I}nstitute of {A}gricultural {R}esearch ({EIAR}) and released for production under diverse agro-ecologies of the country. {I}nformation on the level of genetic diversity among these varieties is scarce. {O}ut of the 42 varieties, the genetic diversity of 40 widely cultivated commercial varieties was assessed using 14 simple sequence repeat ({SSR}) markers. {T}hese markers revealed polymorphism among the varieties. {H}igh average number of polymorphic alleles (7.5) and polymorphic information content ({PIC} = 80%) per locus were detected among the varieties. {T}he genetic similarity among varieties using the {J}accard's similarity coefficient ranged from 0.14 to 0.78, with a mean of 0.38. {T}he range of genetic similarity coefficient values in 92% of the possible pair-wise combinations varied from 0.14 to 0.50, indicating the presence of distant genetic relatedness among the varieties. {U}nweighted pair group method using arithmetic mean ({UPGMA}) clustering showed six major clusters and three singletons. {C}offee varieties, belonging to the same geographic origin, were distributed across clusters. {T}his study represents the first evidence of the presence of a high level of genetic diversity in {E}thiopian commercial arabica coffee varieties. {D}ivergent varieties with complementing traits could be crossed to develop productive hybrid coffee varieties.}, keywords = {{G}enebank ; geographic origin ; hybrid coffee ; landraces ; polymorphism ; similarity coefficient ; {ETHIOPIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {C}rop {I}mprovement}, volume = {35}, numero = {2}, pages = {147--168}, ISSN = {1542-7528}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1080/15427528.2020.1803169}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010079733}, }
