@article{fdi:010079534, title = {{G}enetic diversity and ecology of coronaviruses hosted by cave-dwelling bats in {G}abon}, author = {{M}aganga, {G}. {D}. and {P}into, {A}. and {M}ombo, {I}. {M}. and {M}adjitobaye, {M}. and {B}eyeme, {A}. {M}. {M}. and {B}oundenga, {L}. and {G}ouilh, {M}. {A}. and {N}'{D}ilimabaka, {N}. and {D}rexler, {J}. {F}. and {D}rosten, {C}. and {L}eroy, {E}ric}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{L}ittle research on coronaviruses has been conducted on wild animals in {A}frica. {H}ere, we screened a wide range of wild animals collected in six provinces and five caves of {G}abon between 2009 and 2015. {W}e collected a total of 1867 animal samples (cave-dwelling bats, rodents, non-human primates and other wild animals). {W}e explored the diversity of {C}o{V}s and determined the factors driving the infection of {C}o{V}s in wild animals. {B}ased on a nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, only bats, belonging to the {H}ipposideros gigas (4/156), {H}ipposideros cf. ruber (13/262) and {M}iniopterus inflatus (1/249) species, were found infected with {C}o{V}s. {W}e identified alphacoronaviruses in {H}. gigas and {H}. cf. ruber and betacoronaviruses in {H}. gigas. {A}ll {A}lphacoronavirus sequences grouped with {H}uman coronavirus 229{E} ({HC}o{V}-229{E}). {E}cological analyses revealed that {C}o{V} infection was significantly found in {J}uly and {O}ctober in {H}. gigas and in {O}ctober and {N}ovember in {H}. cf ruber. {T}he prevalence in the {F}aucon cave was significantly higher. {O}ur findings suggest that insectivorous bats harbor potentially zoonotic {C}o{V}s; highlight a probable seasonality of the infection in cave-dwelling bats from the {N}orth-{E}ast of {G}abon and pointed to an association between the disturbance of the bats' habitat by human activities and {C}o{V} infection.}, keywords = {{GABON}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {10}, numero = {1}, pages = {7314 [13p.]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1038/s41598-020-64159-1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010079534}, }
