@article{fdi:010079340, title = {{C}ommensalism outweighs phylogeographical structure in its effect on phenotype of a {S}udanian savanna rodent}, author = {{M}ikula, {O}. and {N}icolas, {V}. and {B}oratynski, {Z}. and {D}enys, {C}. and {D}obigny, {G}authier and {F}ichet-{C}alvet, {E}. and {G}agare, {S}. and {H}utterer, {R}. and {N}imo-{P}aintsil, {S}. {C}. and {O}layemi, {A}. and {B}ryja, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he murid rodent {P}raomys daltoni is widespread in {S}udanian savanna and woodlands of {W}est {A}frica, and previous study of mitochondrial {DNA} variability suggested that it encompasses the phenotypically (small, grey-bellied) and ecologically (commensal) distinct form, {P}raomys derooi. {H}ere, we comprehensively examined the genetic and morphological diversity within the complex. {S}ix mitochondrial lineages showed a fine-scale phylogeographical pattern, whereas delimitation based on nuclear loci pooled four of them into a single widespread unit. {A} newly discovered lineage from southern {M}auritania stands apart from the rest of the complex and might represent an unrecognized species. {A}t the same time, the internal position of {P}. derooi ({C}2 mitochondrial lineage) was confirmed by the multilocus analysis. {T}he magnitude of genetic distances between major phylogeographical lineages was typical for interspecific divergence in other clades of {P}raomys, despite the little differences among them in morphology (skull and upper molar row shapes). {T}he most pronounced morphological shift was associated with a transition to commensalism, especially in {P}. derooi, but also in other lineages. {T}his makes the whole complex a suitable model for the study of phenotypic novelty, the evolution of commensalism and conditions for ecological speciation.}, keywords = {commensalism ; phylogeography ; rodents ; species differentiation ; {S}udanian ; savanna ; {AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST} ; {ZONE} {SOUDANIENNE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iological {J}ournal of the {L}innean {S}ociety}, volume = {129}, numero = {4}, pages = {931--949}, ISSN = {0024-4066}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1093/biolinnean/blz184}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010079340}, }
