@article{fdi:010079318, title = {{A}ssessment of heavy metal concentrations and its potential eco-toxic effects in soils and sediments in {D}ong {C}ao catchment, {N}orthern {V}ietnam}, author = {{M}ai, {H}. and {M}aeghtb, {J}. {L}. and {B}ui, {V}. {H}. and {V}alentin, {C}hristian}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he environmental risks associated with the concentration of metals in soils and sediments due to their toxicological properties on living organisms are not yet sufficiently studied in {N}orth {V}ietnam. {S}oil samples and sediments collected from three weirs ({W}1, {W}2 and {W}4) of the {D}ong {C}ao catchment (49.7 ha) and from the downstream {C}ua {K}hau reservoir ({CK}) were analyzed for heavy metal concentrations and geochemical parameters. {B}ioassays were then applied to assess the toxicity of these soils and sediments based on a test of phytotoxicity with garden cress ({L}epidium savitum) and the {B}io{T}ox test for toxicity to bacteria, using {A}llivibrio fischeri. {M}etal concentrations in sediments ({C}r and {C}u) were significantly higher in the {D}ong {C}ao catchment ({W}1 and {W}4) in comparison with the reservoir area. {T}he toxicity of soils and sediments of {W}1 and {W}4 was detected at a low level by the two bioassay tests. {I}nhibition of light emission by {A}llivibrio fischeri was slightly reduced for soils and sediments of {W}1 and {W}4 after 15-min of the contact. {S}imilarly, this slight impact has been reflected in the growth and seed germination of {L}epidium savitum in the sediment samples collected from the weirs of {D}ong {C}ao catchment. {T}he major pollutant metals were {C}r, {C}u and {Z}n. {C}r contamination is undoubtedly derived from rocks whereas {C}u and {Z}n are most likely associated with human activities (local agricultural inputs and atmospheric fallout).}, keywords = {{C}u ; {C}r ; {Z}n ; ecological risk ; upland region ; soil ; sediment toxicity ; {VIET} {NAM} ; {DONG} {CAO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{V}ietnam {J}ournal of {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {42}, numero = {2}, pages = {187--204}, ISSN = {0866-7187}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.15625/0866-7187/42/2/15046}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010079318}, }
