@article{fdi:010079121, title = {{L}ate 21st century projected changes in the relationship between precipitation, {A}frican {E}asterly {J}et, and {A}frican {E}asterly {W}aves}, author = {{K}ebe, {I}. and {D}iallo, {I}. and {S}ylla, {M}. {B}. and {D}e {S}ales, {F}. and {D}iedhiou, {A}rona}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he present study utilizes three high-resolution simulations from the {R}egional {C}limate {M}odel version 4 ({R}eg{CM}4) to examine the late 21st century changes (2080-2099) in the {W}est {A}frican {M}onsoon ({WAM}) features. {A} set of three {E}arth {S}ystem {M}odels are utilized to provide initial and lateral boundary conditions to the {R}eg{CM}4 experiments. {O}ur analysis focuses on seasonal mean changes in {WAM} large-scale dynamical features, along with their connections with the summer monsoon precipitation. {I}n the historical period, the simulation ensemble means mimic reasonably well the intensity and spatial distribution of the {WAM} rainfall as well as the {WAM} circulation patterns at different scales. {T}he future projection of the {WAM} climate exhibits warming over the whole {W}est {A}frica leading to precipitation reduction over the {S}ahel region, and a slight increase over some areas of the {G}uinea {C}oast. {T}he position of the {A}frican {E}asterly {J}et ({AEJ}) is shifted southward and the {A}frican {E}asterly {W}aves ({AEW}s) activities are reduced, which affect in turn the {WAM} rainbelt characteristics in terms of position and strength. {O}verall the changes in simulated {AEJ} and {AEW}s contribute substantially to reduce the seasonal summer mean precipitation in {W}est {A}frica by the late 21st century, with prevailing negative changes in the {S}avanna-{S}ahel region. {T}o further explore the robustness of the relationships revealed in this paper, future studies using different high-resolution regional climate models with large ensemble are recommended.}, keywords = {{R}eg{CM}4 ; climate change ; {W}est {A}frican {M}onsoon ; {A}frican {E}asterly {J}et ; {A}frican {E}asterly {W}aves ; high-resolution regional climate models ; {AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}tmosphere}, volume = {11}, numero = {4}, pages = {art. 353 [20 p.]}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.3390/atmos11040353}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010079121}, }
